savemoney I have just come from the waste scotland site where I have ordered 2 x 330 ltr compost bins delivered for the total price of £20.

I was soooo tempted to get the nicer looking green ones but they would have cost me £50 or £60 depending on size so I resisted and just stayed practical. I'll hide the boring black plastic ones with a trellis or something.
This gardening lark is getting addictive, lol. I think next year will be better as I'll have learnt more (right now I don't have a clue
) and I'll already have the beds and compost etc available. Herman - MP for all!

Anyway, I'm finding the cost of compost really pocket breaking.
Most of the garden is slabbed just now and the small bit of mud that we have is just that, clay type mud, stones and weeds so I figured poor quality for growing veg etc. Digging this up would also cause a rather large hole as it really is only a small area.
I've just spent £16 on 4 bags of compost and it's nowhere near enough to fill the raised bed thing I bought. Is that just par for the course? Do I just have to accept raised beds = expensive to fill? Maybe I was just being unrealistic / naive. :undecided I thought growing your own was supposed to be cheap. This is costing a fortune. It will be 10 years before I recoup the cost through not buying lettuce.
I think bags of topsoil may be cheaper than compost or you could try to get topsoil from a local builders merchants. Also try your local recycling centre as ours in Cambridge gives compost away free.“A journey is best measured in friends, not in miles.”

Does anyone know how many litres are in a tonne of compost?
I couldn't make enough of my own including for new raised beds so I was hoping to find my council offered free green waste compost or the next county site but no luck. The quote I got locally was £20 a tonne and £39 per hour delivery
I reckon I'm an hour and a half away so £60 delivery. No longer half of Optimisticpair
