I can remember the Winter of 62/63 as a child. It seemed to go on forever, and our House had no central heating, just a fire in the Lounge!

Now that's just plain mean - yes I remember that winter too, it my little siser was born inthe january - it was a home birth and we had no central heating - but we did have the luxury of a gas fire in the front room, so my mum and baby sis spent the mandatory 7 days convalescence in a bed in the front room. That was also the year that I learned that my Dad could cook (a skill rapidly forgotten once mum was up and about again!)

OP do let us know how you go on, but my experience is that generally speaking, people do tend to pull together when faced with such unusual circumstances

In 1962/3 there must have still been millions of homes without a bathroom let alone central heating. Houses were still being built in 1970s without CH, despite an advertising campaign started by Shell BP in 1959 to be like "Mrs 1970" and install oil fired central heating now.

As I remember 62/63 the trouble was that once the snow had fallen it couldn't melt as temperatures remained below freezing. School's football pitches were frozen solid so had 2 free afternoons a week for several weeks.

We had coal fires in both downstairs rooms, but just lived in the back room that winter, it was much warmer. Also had heat from gas cooker when that was on. Moved house that summer and mum and dad decided to have CH installed the following year.

  • I remember the snow in 78 i think, i remember opening the front door to get the coal to build the living room fire and the snow falling into the house, my mum was not impressed. We spent that winter sleeping downstairs as it was too cold upstair, it was a great community experience.

I've seen loads of people helping out this week (i've even dug out and pushed a car), it really shows the way we can pull together and the sense of acheivement when we overcome the obstacle,

i don't know what will happen tomorrow, but fingers crossed it all goes well one way or another, do keep us updated as the day unfolds, i'll be avidly following the thread,

Apparently we are due blizzards tonight.........can't wait :)

My fun memory is of January 1981, in Dunblane in Scotland. Yeah, well lots of people remember Dunblane for other reasons, but what I remember it for is COLD. There is a river runs through the town and it was actually frozen at the waterfall. We had to spread a towel around the toilet seat before we dared to sit down. The toothpaste froze in the tube. We wore woolly hats to bed (it was a single bed with a single duvet and two slightly randy 20 somethings, but that's another story). The flat where we were living, or to be precise OH was living as he was unemployed so I had to have another address, had a heater of some sort in the living/kitchen area, and that was all.

I also remember that the place where I was supposed to be living was left empty over christmas. I went over after the thaw and found mayhem. A frozen pipe had burst, under concrete (that house didn't have central heating). In the sink, still frozen, was a teapot containing magic mushrooms ... that was the kind of housemates I had. My own 'room' - a freezing, steel clad extension - was dripping. I don't know what happened but my copy of Jane Grigson's veg book was never the same again, but my Claudia Roden Middle Eastern Cookery made it.

Hey, I know that wasn't relevant, but it was fun. More importantly, I'd imagine everyone understands and will work together. Contract law isn't so stupid it ignores the fact you were all snowed in. Good luck (I have memories of living in Vachel Road in the centre of Reading too, but I won't burden you with the sheer horror of the house with the dripping walls for now).

I remember having 'chilblains' as a kid, probably most winters - never hear about them now!

Well we didn't move yesterday or today but apparently every one is trying for tomorrow again. I really hope it happens tomorrow because if it doesn't there is more snow due Sunday and Monday so won't happen until middle/end of next week, expensive and very awkward to say the least, living out of boxes sucks! Will let you know how we go...
