Broadband packages for XBOX live&surfing

Hi there, we currently use BT for broadband but at peak times when on the xbox the connection is so slow it's pointless playing live when other have faster connections. we also surf on the pc too, any ideas for speeding things up? Do BT "throttle" the speed at peek time?this seems unfair as we pay the same rate all the time, supposedly for up to 8 MG but usually about 2 if we're lucky!

We just went with BT as we were a bit bamboozled by all the options but now our contract is nearly up we are ready to start looking about, with hopefully a little help from you guys who seem to know lots lol!

BT do throttle speeds at peak times but only on things like peer to peer and iplayer and usually on the option 1 package the unlimited is also throttled at peak times for peer to peer traffic. If your speed is slow it may be your distance from exchange. check www.speedtester.bt.com to see what speed you are getting and also http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.welcome to see what max line speed your line is able to handle.
Switching provider does not mean a faster speed though as they all use the same line but some LLU providers are a lot faster than BT.
Check your exchange at www.samknows.co.uk. to see what other providers are in your area

personal recommendations are O2 or BE if available if they are LLU in your area. your best option as cheap fast and unlimited

BE is good. Using that right now, £18 a month but on quidco they can have some sign up deals. Up to 24 meg line, so should be sufficient for you.

Whatever you chose, don't forget to ask for your MAC code ;)

The best broadband packages for online gaming are Be Unlimited (Pro if you want static IP), Plusnet "Pro for gamers" and also Sky Unlimited is totally unlimited with absolutely no fair use policy whatsoever.

There's a list of fair use policies and whether or not the package has any totally unmetered usage http://www.chooseisp.co.uk/compare/broadband/heavy-use.asp or go to the 'broadband,tv,phone' section to see the Sky packages as you have to have Sky TV. There's also an article on plusnet vs. be for online gaming too: http://www.chooseisp.co.uk/broadband-guide/articles/be-vs-plusnet-who-wins-in-battle-of-online-gamers.html
