i bought a laptop from currys and never realised until i showed my brother it that it was a 64bit operating system and he told me i might run into problems with drivers and software im a nooob and this wasnt explained when i purchased the laptop all i got was the sales patter.i contacted the laptop make hp and there reply was buy the 32 bit system or take it back.i called currys customer service and explained that the laptop was 64 bit and i realy wanted 32 bit and i wasnt happy with the product and they said i could take it to the nearest currys and get a refund.so i made a 20 mile trip to the nearest currys and the guy behind the counter said there was nothing wrong with the machine and he wasnt going to refund me...i explained about the compatibilty issues with software and prephreials down the line and i wasnt happy with the laptop.so after arguing the toss we got nowhere.where do i stand and what are my options

Ok...
1) did they, or did they not say it was 64-bit.
if so
2) did they or did they not mention incompatibility.
3)Also did you specifically state you wanted 32-bit at purchase (by the sound of it you didnt.)
4) What issues are you runing into?
EDIT: took out some lines as i miss read.Back by no demand whatsoever.0 -
im not sure if they mentioned 64bit they never mentioned incompatibilty didnt know about 64bit and 32bit diferences.and i bought a freeview tv dongle and its not 64bit compatible.i realy want to know my statuory rights because if your not happy with a product for whatever reason dont you have the right to take it back..0

nope.
if it's faulty you have a right.
if you're just not happy with it, currys don't have to and look as if they aren't going to take it backhelpful tips
it's spelt d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y
there - 'in or at that place'
their - 'owned by them'
they're - 'they are'
it's bought not brought (i just bought my chicken a suit from that new shop for £6.34)0 -
If the product is not faulty, not as described or not fit for purpose then you have no right to return it.
Unless it was advertised incorrectly as being 32bit when you bought it I don't think you have a leg to stand on. Maybe as a self-confessed noob you should have done a bit more research into your purchase, maybe asking your brother's advice prior to jumping in with both feet.0 -

No you don't have a right to take anything back for "whatever reason you want" (unless its online/mail order/phone order in which case see Distance selling regs but this is irrelevant atm)
In your case, you dont have any rights really. You saw what the OS was, DSGi make a habit of displaying when the OS is 64-bit as its regarded an advantage nowadays (consider yourself lucky i'd say). It is not DSGi's fault you didnt know what the differences were, its up to you to ask or find out.
My advice, buy a new compatible tuner, and be happy you have 64-bit as 32-bit is now being superseded by it for mainstream computers (for windows anyways) and in the next 1-3 versions of windows, it will cease to exist.Back by no demand whatsoever.0 -
I thought you could take back within 28 days.(perhaps computers are different?) Whats on the back of your receipt?:smileyhea0

Perhaps not for any item ever?.......
unless company policy say otherwise but if you were talking about statutory rights then you are completely wrongBack by no demand whatsoever.0 -
What OS did you get with the laptop?0

My boyfriend is an Engineer in a big UK computer company and insisted on reply to this so here he goes.....
I will hazard a guess that you have been sold a 64 bit operating system for a reason. This is normally if you have decided to have 4Gb of RAM in the system. If you attempt to use a 32 bit operating system with 4Gb of RAM you wont be able actually use the full 4Gb of memory. typically you will only be able to use between 3-3 1/2 Gb of the RAM which is physically in the PC. This is a fundemental limitation of 32bit operating systems and has existed for decades. The Company I work for have no end of problems with customers who pick 4Gb with 32 bit windows and then come back to us saying "where is the rest of my memory" so before demanding a refund and getting a 32 bit system bear this fact in mind!
With regard to the availability of drivers and application support for 64 bit windows, I would not personally be too worried, the type of operating system you choose will have more impact down the road e.g. Windows 7 is more future proof now than XP or Vista is.
The 64 bit specification of your system may not have been specifically identified to you but i would be hugely suprised if it wasn't mentioned in written specification of the computer. If it wasn't you are the least of HP worries as they will be in violation of the Microsofts MDA agreement. I can tell you that the MDA agreement is worth several million pounds to them!!!
In summary, dont sweat it... it will be just fineIf you aim for the moon if you miss at least you will land among the stars!0 -
i have 64bit windows 7 and found that so far had no compatability issues
i have 2 program files folders one for 64bit programs and im assuming the other one is for 32bit
as windows 7 is the future for all windows based OS's compatibilty issues will decrease as time goes on
also with regards to hardware my 2ish year old printer/scanner has installed all ok, same with mp3 player software, camera software
game wise things like sims 2 has installed all ok
i think someone has worried you with no foundation for it0
