Oxo and the like are full of crap - monosodium glutomate is the second largest ingredient. The organic ones are pretty good though and Swiss Bouillon is a godsend at times.
Don't use old vegetables to makes stock! It will taste rubbish. Buy an extra couple of carrots, onions, celery etc and use them fresh.0 -
hmm, I try to avoid anything with monosodium glutomate but somehow the stock cubes got by me. So, to make stock you just boil up the above veg and use the water as stock? Sorry for being really dense, but I am teaching myself to cook and have never made stock.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

Hi,
Following on from the 'convienience food' thread, it really got me thinking and i am trying to change my cooking habits.....by making everything from scratch.....i will soon be moving home (when they finally part with the keys) and i will be needing to do a complete shop...i have nothing at all for my cupboards so
What would you suggest as the basic essentials for an OS kitchen???
Its not like i dont have the time to cook as im at home all day every day (except for about 3 hours) and ill be the first to admit, i dont cook cause im a lazy bint lol but this has to change!
Any suggestions greatfully recieved

According to the TV advert a big box of eggs would be a good start. You don't need to keep them in the fridge thoughNO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0

Hi,
BBC food has a list of 28 store cupboard basics and a basic description of what they are and how they're normally used
http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/back_to_basics/storecupboard.shtml
But really it depends on what you like, we like lots of mediterranean style food, so our basics will be a bit different to a curry fan.0 -
Hiya,
I seem to remember we've had a couple of threads like this before, with varitations on a theme (like stocking from scratch, and food for students). Cant remember where they'll be, but try doing a search on "storecupboard", and hope that Squeaky can come along and work his magic for you!!:DI'd rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are; because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star. Here's one - hope it helps. Maybe also try the Mega Index.
Edit - just noticed the thread I've linked above is the same thread as is listed in the mega index.I'd rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are; because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star.
