I think the issue here is that EON have always billed 5 digits in the meter reading when really it is a 6 dial meter. 6 dial meters are surprisingly common in domestic properties. Until recently, I worked as a meter-reader and came across them fairly often. And 3 phase meters can be 5 dial meters as well, as 6 dial meters.

However, I really think the problem here is that the wrong start reading was used on the original poster's account. I am 99% certain that a 5 digit reading was used when a 6 digit reading should have been used. Thus EON have now billed the OP for all of the supposed usage from the incorrect 5 digit reading to the latest correct 6 digit reading. Obviously this would cause an absoulte massive (and wrong) bill.
I don't suppose, 100wpm, that you still have a record of the 6 digit (as opposed to rubbish 5 digit reading) you took when you moved in. Your account should have been opened using that 6 digit reading.

I do still have it as I never throw anything away (good job isn't it !!). It was 189462.

The problem is virtually certainly not with the meter, it is with how the account has been billed! If they started the OP off on a 5 dial meter when in reality it was a 6 dial meter, and now finally EON realise that in fact there is a 6 dial meter is there - they will bill the difference from the previous reading based incorrectly on a 5 dial meter up all the way up to the correct 6 dial reading. Can anyone not grasp this??!!
100wpm, I would look at the meter regularly each day for say, a week, taking a meter reading each time (a 6 dial reading each time!) and then get back to EON with each meter reading so they can see what sort of electric you are actually using.

Yes as I state above it is not the meter that is the problem its the problem of EON's staff who have not been trained to know what is a five meter reading or six and I am now supposed to pay for that !! Thanks for your post.

    Hi 100wpm,

I can't explain what's happened here without detail I'm afraid, but as per my last post, if you email me on the email address provided I am in a position to chase this up for you.

  • Get a local registered electrician in and possibly have the supply converted to single phase.

Have the consumer units supplying the house checked and isolate all circuits not identified, this is easier with a more modern MCB consumer unit- if you find something not working then it is easier to switch it on

    Get it checked out

You could have the electrican put in a meter (of your own - they are only around £25-£35). This will give you a definative answer as to the ACTUAL power used

You should use a competent person for the work, links below

    baldly going on...

Hi 100wpm - Over the course of this thread you have given two correct 6 figure readings.
189,642 when you moved in app 3 years ago, ( Jan 06?), and 269,910 in October '08.

This is a period of 34 months over which you consumed appx. 80,268Kw - which equates to 28,329Kw a year, which massive for a domestic household.
You have said you don't have Gas, so I assume you are heating with oil, solid fuel or some means other than electricity, but I'm afraid that if it is electricity your 28,329Kw a year is not out of order - (My son in a 2bed all electric flat uses 17,000Kw a year)

What these figures show if you are not heating with electric, is that the massive ££ demand from EON is not caused wholly by confused meter readings, there is greater problem with either a faulty meter, a leakage in your house wiring, or power being supplied to a building other than your home
