Police at door this morning..

Had a strange visit from police this morning at 7.45am..both dh and i were still in bed.He went to the door and they asked for some man and he said sorry youve got the wrong address they asked how long weve lived here, and who we rent the property from..and then went..but it just seemed really weird..its a very desirable area we are living in not some dodgy area and there was 4 of them and all in normal clothes and only one had a black police vest on..didnt show id or ask for us to prove ours..and they were in normal cars..hubby thinks im being neurotic and to just let it go.but weve never had any mail for anyone with another name since we moved in 7 months ago..and im worried that more the point someone could be using this address for something?would you be concerned??

Why not contact the police, tell them your concerns then when they are able they may well be able to reassure you.Get the Police to confirm they were police officers,it seems unusual not to show i/d.Don't think I would have your concerns,it may have been duff information they were given.

I would agree that it is odd not to show ID, most officers do it automatically.

I hate to dispel your illusion, but don't think that living in a nice area makes you immune from criminal activity. I also live in a desirable area, but had a murder next door to me. Crime happens anywhere, and you never know what has happened in a house before you lived there (I'm sure my walls could tell some stories)!
    Gone ... or have I?
  • yep, best advice is to contact your local police and retell them that story, ask if they're conducting anything in your area, or if there's something you need to keep an eye out for at your address

good luck, i hope it's nothing

It sounds to me as though the officers were investigating a crime, intending to make arrest (if the suspect was at home) and to search the house where he or she lived. If the suspect had moved, then they would have asked the occupants whether they knew of the new address.

One of the frustrations of being a police officer is that you rarely get accurate and up to date information on the whereabouts of suspects, so you just have to go knocking on doors and eliminating addresses. You might just have vague information that they live at no.21 something Road - and then you find that there are about 10 houses with that address in the county!

You can rest assured that if anyone had given your address as their place of residence or had been connected with the address in any way, then the officers would have alerted you to it. As it was, they knew within a few seconds of speaking to your OH that they were in the wrong place........ and their search needed to continue.

For obvious reasons, they would not tell you what kind of crime or person they were investigating. It's unfortunate that their silence makes you uneasy and baffled by the mystery. I hope my educated guess puts your mind at rest.

I agree with the not fretting, at least they didn't come round at 5AM and use their 'big key' to open the door :)

The whole point is - would showing you a police warrant card have made you feel better? The one I had looked so cheap and plasticy that anyone could have made it on a computer. Do you know what one looks like or tell that its genuine? In future if the door knocks, make sure you lock all windows and secure all back doors too. Ask through the spyhole who is calling, if uniformed police check if their car is outside the house. Ask them to wait whilst you call the police station and confirm they have a reason to be there. Make sure the chain is on the door when you ask to see identification. No officer can set foot in your house unless they have a warrant - or under some other circumstances where they believe a crime is taking place or have firm belief a suspect is on the premises at that exact time. There has been many bogus callers identitying them as police officers - you could have been another victim of gang robbery / home invasion or even sexual assault. You are right to be concerned. Even though it is probable it was the police (they didnt do anything besides leave) its not a matter to trivialise.

my advice ... as im a bit of a neurotic freak and trust very few, just to put your mind at rest i would ring the station and ask them to confirm officers were sent by them to your address. ... If, as you say, you are in an affluent area they may not be officers, but were wrong uns, just be having a little look round in order to come back later with a big van....
