Just to say I had an email from Which last night saying that Kia have announced that all of their new cars will now have a 7 year transferable warranty.

Worth considering if you're thinking of a new car, as I am.
Waddle you do eh?

Other manufacturers won't follow this trend soon. It will take years to change people's perception about Korean cars.

Moreover, Ford & Vauxhall sell most cars to fleet buyers, who usually don't keep cars beyond 3 years. So long warranty has no value to them.

So far only Daihatsu has followed steps and offers 5-yr warranty on all cars. I'm leaving Hyundai here as they are part of Kia group anyway.

PS: Most likely my next car will be a Kia :)
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

these warranties are very tempting but the brand and car itsself is not. this is exactly why they offer it to try and alter perceptions, and i think its working, well done car makers!

ps. if the warranty is anything like other manufacturers it only covers actual catasprophic engine failure.
no tyres, brakes, exhaust, wear and tear, etc etc
Target Savings by end 2009: 20,000
current savings: 20,500 (target hit yippee!)
Debts: 8000 (student loan so doesnt count)

new target savings by Feb 2010: 30,000

As it did with the Japanese Cars in the early days until the penny finally dropped.

BTW, I think that Kia is part of the Hyundai Group, not the other way around.

So it covers everything you'd expect a warranty to do then ;)

This is changing at increasing rate. The lease companies are owned by banks and they are cutting costs by NOT buying new cars but offering customers heavily reduced offers to extend contracts by another year and keep the car they are in. (This is one factor which has pushed used car values up recently - the other being scrappage)

A 7 year warranty will scream out to some fleet managers as being a good thing providing its on cars he can 'sell' to his drivers and providing the service/manintenance/repair bills are lower due to warranty (and product and dealer network is reliable)

A few years back Kia and Hyundai wouldnt have got a look in but they are targeting fleet aggresively and have the products that fleet drivers are starting to look at.

If you had said 10 years ago the police fleets would be using Skoda as fast persuit vehicles people would have laughed.

Anyone know if there is much difference between Diahatsu and Kia, as I was considering a Diahatsu Sirion or Kia Rio, and the fact that the Kia did not have the longer warranty was swaying me towards the Diahatsu?

Another factor that is important to me is the comfort of the driving position. Recent MRI scan has revealed I have slipped discs, and I know that the driving position can be a contributing factor, and both the above cars have a decent headroom.

Other factors are that I do about 60 miles a day to work and back, and can be either on the motorway or city driving. Depending on whether or not the M25 is acting as a car park.

Daihatsu is Japanese, mainly owned by Toyota, Kia is Korean, mainly owned by Hyundai.
