Boots online - is this normal?

Really !!!!ed off with Boots online!
I've never ordered from them before but my hairdryer went bang over Christmas and rather than trek to the shops I ordered a new one from Boots online on 30th December.
I've just (21:47 this evening) received an email from Boots advising that the other item I ordered (to make up the free postage!) has been shipped but that they have cancelled the hairdryer (very kindly they haven't charged me for it )
Is this normal for Boots online service? I've never known an online retailer do this before - to take the order and then four days later just email to say they won't be dispatching it and have cancelled the item.
Needless to say they won't be on my favourites list for another order.

My mum is not happy with Boots.com either.
She ordered items in their sale when it went live on Christmas Eve, might even have been 23rd Dec. She put order through and was told it would be delivered in January. 5th or 6th.
So this morning she receives e-mails telling her order has been sent and should arrive today but that half her order is not available anymore. They clearly don't allocate stock to orders in any sort of order as some of the items were still available to buy for several days after but now they are not there.0 -
I got my fridge freezer from boots appliances website and never had any problems perhaps they mis calculated how bust theyd be over xmas0

I think the main problem Boots need to sort is the fact they are not allocating stock to orders when they come in!!!! It is clearly not first come first served!!!0

I also orderded as soon as the boots sale went live and have had 4 items of my 6 item order cancelled! Not a great experience this year although in the past it has been good.:money: giving me & my darling boys a better cheaper life

I don't know about the Boots website but I had this happen to me on the Waterstone's website. I ordered 3 books for my boyfriend for Christmas and only received 2 of them, the 3rd is still nowhere to be seen, very frustrating!0

I love Boots online, as you can have any item delivered to your local Boots to pick up, which means no long treks to sorting offices at unearthly hours to pick up undelivered parcels!
A good service for those who work all day and live miles from their sorting office.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -

I've whinged at Boots about this and in their first email in response (give them their due they responded the next day), they say that if the items are out of stock then the order can't be fulfilled.
I emailed back to advise that when I checked their website this morning the item was still available. They've responded again to say that if the stock isn't available when the order is picked then that's it the items are cancelled even if further stock then comes in the same day.
It's a barking system and I won't be using them again, I need to know that I am actually going to get the goods that I have ordered. I am still without a hairdryer as I haven't been able to get out and buy one. To make it worse, the rest of the order has been delivered and the documentation indicates that the rest of the order will follow which is not the case.
Poor show Boots, I expected better from you.Piglet

Are you not still prone to the same "stock" problem if they are actually sending the item to the store rather than using stock that might already be instore?
I won't use them again on principle, there are plenty of good internet retailers around who have a sensible stock allocation process.Piglet

I've used it a few times, ordering a couple of items at a time sometimes, but never had any issues. They even send me a text to let me know when it's in store" Perhaps I've just been lucky?!?!Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
