What do you do at Xmas with your adult kids & partners?

With regard to present giving, and adult children who have left home.....do you give them and their partner a joint gift, a gift each of equal worth or do you give your 'child' more and their partner a token gift?

My dd is 22 and lives with her OH in Ireland, I spent more on her than him. I suppose he had about a third of her total, if that makes sense.
  • My mother in law gives us an amount of cash between us to spend how we like ;)
  • My mum spend the same on me and hubby as she does with my other sis and husband but she loves both our partners as a son IYKWIM

Both my parents and my in-laws just by us a 'nice' gift each. I've never thought about how much they spend on each of us. Now I come to think of it though maybe slightly more was spent by my folks on my handbag than hubby's top, but as I said I'd never thought of it till now and it definitely wouldn't be apparent to anyone else.

My bro and his fiance asked for money toward their new bedroom so they got that between them.

    Any reason for asking aliasojo?

  • I would expect parents to spend more on their own child than on a partner.
I also wouldn't expect my partner's mum to spend as much on me as she does on her own children.

Lol....too much time on my hands and sat here by myself with my wandering thoughts as OH is at work. :D

Son has been half living at home and half living with his g/f although he spent the whole Christmas holiday here and she was at her parent's house.

Two days ago, he packed the rest of his stuff ready to move in with her full time. Yesterday he had an attack of cold feet and unpacked again. This afternoon he's packed and off.

Now I'm probably jumping the gun a bit but my thoughts are already heading towards next Christmas. This Christmas I spent a fair bit on him and gave her loads of small individual presents, which cost a lot less (or were free via the Body Shop thread ;)).

I couldn't see myself doing that next year if they are still together (which I hope they are as she seems nice and is a calming influence on him) as it seems unfair, but then again he is my son.

I just wondered what others did. This will be the first time I will have had to consider an offspring's partner. I would like her to think I'm nice, lol....I really don't want to be the subject of an future MIL jokes. :D

Haha! The fact you're thinking about it tells me you'll be sure to do the right thing I'm sure. The problem with MIL's in my opinion is that they DON'T think before they act! :rotfl:

  • I live with my boyfriend and his mom would usually buy us both a present of around similar value. This year I got a fab handbag and he got a bottle of aftershave. Some years though she has got us a joint present, like a voucher for somewhere or something for the house.
