Collecting new car scrappage scheme, Tax, insurance and registration

tbh, most dealers are recommending gap insurance for cars bought on the scrappage scheme. now i know most people will say its just a sales ploy, but as yet, no insurance company will confirm whether they will pay out at current market value, or purchase price on a car bought on the scrappage scheme (most do base it on purchase price)
so for a gap policy costing £200, at least you know where you stand

Would gap insurance be an extra insurance so she would have her regular churchill insurance and an added gap insurance? And if so does she have to get it at the exact same time she gets her churchill insurance or can she get it later?
They actually wanted her to collect the car this Friday but she cant, they only informed her yesterday it was in. They asked her if she would want the 7 day cover when they rang her and the car will be taxed for 6 months, I thought it would have been a year.
She rang and asked about the 7 day cover and they confirmed it would not cover her business use so she is going to call churchill tonight to ask them to cover her from Monday, should she tell churchill the dealers are covering her with the 7 day cover? if she hadnt need business cover she would have just asked churchill to cover her after the 7 day cover ran outThanx

Is the dealer paying for the tax included in the agreement? Or is she paying for it? If she is paying for it she can request 12 months and they will add the rest on to her invoice.0

Gap is an extra insurance - you usually have about 7-10 days after buying the car to get it, however you dont have to buy if from the dealer, so check prices online first - it basically covers you for difference between what you paid for your car, and what your insurer thinks its worth, should you need to make a total loss claim
so when buying a car, if it costs £10k to buy new from the forecourt, but your insurer says that once its driven off the forecourt its only worth £9k, then the gap insurance would payout the difference
with the scrappage scheme, because you are getting £2k off the price, then based on that an insurer could say the car is only worth what you had to pay under the scrappage scheme. however, should you need to make a claim and replace the car, because you no longer have a car to scrap, you would have to pay the full price for a replacement vehicle, so you could really loose out
I am surprised that 12m RFL isnt included in the deal, as usually the OTR price for the vehicle is based on having 12m

She says included in the full price was a registration set up and tax for 12 months at about £175 so its not really free is it.
The dealer told her she had to arrange the 7 day cover herself and gave her a freephone number to ring and thier retailer number to quote when she got through, he said she would be waiting on the phone for a long time but stressed the call was free. I thought they were supposed to do that for her.
She tried several times without success and couldnt keep waiting so asked me if I could do it for her but after waiting so long on the phone everytime it got to being answered it cut off so I thought the only thing I could do is choose a different option number and ask them to transfer to the right dept. I did that and got through to insurance quotes and the man there said he could set the 7 day up for her there. He asked me lots of details saying it was needed for the 7 day insurance and he also said she could use it for business cover too which I knew I had been told this wasnt the case. He then started reeling off how much the excess would be etc and I was not pleased he had taken it as a full insurance quote. I'm worried now in case the free insurance hasnt gone through ok and rang back again to check through the correct option number but its still getting cut offThanx

they always have to give you a 'full quote' as the free 7 day policy is just a marketing tool - when the 7 day insurance is due to expire, they will contact your DD and ask her if she wants to take out the full policy - it isnt hard sell, so dont be worried about being put on the spot
perhaps business insurance is included. tbh its not something ive ever had to check, as i dont work for a manf that is known for its 'company cars'. most people who buy vehicles for business use, tend to purchase vans or top end motors - things i dont deal in lol - i just assumed as they have so many stipulations on the free insurances, that they wouldnt offer business cover

I bought a Vauxhall under the scrappage scheme, and took up the 7 day insurance cover. They will want to offer a full quote, but to check if the 7 day one has gone through, call the dealers to see if they have received the fax detailing your daughter's cover.
BTW Don't forget the old tax disc, then you can download the refund form off the dvla website and send everything off together - GET PROOF OF POSTING.0 -
Shes rang back and double checked it all and it is set up as business. Will still contact dealer tomorrow when they have recieved the email from volkswagon to be well and truly sure seeing as they originally said it wasnt possible, if that still stays she can then set her own insurance to start the folllowing Monday 18th which is the day she moves anyway so she can then change the address and cover at the same time. Hope it goes through ok nowThanx

Lady K - I remember when all this started
glad she got the Polo.
Honestly, you are worrying too much. The 7 day insurance note will be faxed to the dealership, that will be sufficient for them to tax the car. Meanwhile it sounds like she has sorted out her own business cover on the car.
Stop worrying and enjoy

Thankyou Hethmar
I really want her to enjoy it too
Got it sorted, well mostly. Dealer confirmed the emailed 7 day cover has business on it so thats ok. The insurance company quoted only £66 extra to pay keeping everything the same but just changing the car and address for the 18th and that included the £25 charge for adjusting the policy. They said so long as the car is worth less than £30.000 they don't need the value, just the model and any modifications. May look into the gap insurance yet though.
Just had other problems on top with daughters letting agent now saying she has to see out a 2 month notice even though her contract ends on 18th so the insurance will now come with my house address on as she changed it for 18th at the same time. She is thinking of leaving it like that now though seeing as its not going to be that long. She will have to send the v5 off to be changed within the week of registering, will that be ok? Its just she needs all documents correct for her job.Thanx

When updating the insurance for the new car it was either forgotten or not noted that she wanted the miles to be increased a bit. The new policy has come today so that was very fast but the miles are the same. What I want to know is because this is a new car will the miles start new for the insurance or will they take note of the saxo that is going to be scrapped and add it to this years miles?
If its started new its probably ok to wait till her renewal in September and increase the miles then but if they do add the miles togeher from the saxo and new car she will have to call them back again to add it onThanx
