Daughters scrappage scheme Volkswagon new polo is now ready for her to collect from the showroom. She has to pick it up on Monday.

Problem is she is moving house the following Monday just 1 week after, shes coming back home to stay with me for a few months, so would it be possible to register the car from my address now? and if so would she have to change the tax and insurance on the same day she picks it up? plus when getting it taxed is it a simple thing of ringing the tax office and transferring the remainder of tax already on her saxo to the new car?

She uses her car for work so will have to have all documents correctly in place as soon as possible anyway but we were hoping that she could change it all before she actually moves seeing as its her parental home

They have also asked her if she wants the 7 day insurance as they can provide it free but she does need business cover so not sure if this will cover that? I don't know if she would get her own updated insurance documents through by Monday from Churchill anyway.

She has never had a new car so we are a bit nervous about getting the correct cover for it and we want to be sure its properly covered, any advice on this please?

Wondering if it might work out better to take advantage of the free 7 day insurance they can provide if it is business covered and she she will have time to sort out her own with churchill plus they could charge her 2 lots of £25 for changes 2 times in 7 days because of the address change
Thanx

I'd ring the dealership and ask them! We've been lucky enough to pick up two cars through scrappage and as far as the road tax goes, we took the vehicle to be scrapped in, took the tax disc out and then sent it away to reclain the refund outstanding. The dealers had taxed the new cars. Check with your insurers about insurance - each firm will have a slightly different approach, and when you pick the new car up, don't forget to ask what the arrangements are for the paperwork connected with the notification of the scrapping with the DVLA of your old vehicle - one dealership dealt with all the paperwork themselves, the other one handed us the paperwork to complete and send off. It is a bit of a fiddle to sort out, but the dealers - and the DVLA are used to handling this - it'sa what they do all day!

Oh and I hope she enjoys the new car! It really is an exciting thing to be able to afford! My advice would be to look around for the best insurance deal she can get - we 've got insurers who aren't the cheapest, but who have been great with us when we've had a problem, so that's who we've gone with - and I'd always go for fully comp. Her current insurers might well simply transfer the insurance from one vehicle to the other, if she's got an accurate idea of when she'll be picking the new car up. Ours did. HTH

remove the tax disc from her current car at the dealership, then send it to DVLA for a refund - however this will be sent to the address her current car is registered at

the new car has to be registered at the same address, as the V5 for her current car, so youve left it a bit late to think about changing it to your home address

the dealership will need a copy of your DDs insurance to be able to tax the vehicle, why this hasnt been asked for sooner is a bit beyond me, as until the car is taxed it cant leave the forecourt

you DD can contact her current insurer now, and ask as of date/time she is collecting car, for her insurance to be transferred over to the new one, meaning she will be covered under her current policy for business use

take the 7 day insurance, just so the dealership can tax the car. because as you say, a covernote from her current insurer will take too long to come through

finally, pay for mail redirection, as the V5 will be going to her old address, as will the RFL refund

When you say they need a copy of her insurance do you mean for the car that is being scrapped or the new one? Will the dealers 7 day insurance be likely to cover business?

I'm not sure if they may let her pick it up a few days later if she can change her old cars v5 by then, how long would it take to come through if she rang tomorrow?

Will be paying for mail redirection anyway as she wont get her mail passed on for sure otherwise as the house will then be empty
    Thanx

they will already have seen insurance docs for her current car (under terms of the scrappage scheme) - what they need is a covernote for the new vehicle, so they can tax it

the 7 day insurance wont cover business use, but its the quickest way for the dealer to get a covernote (as its sent by email to the dealer). as a covernote from her own insurer, might or not make it the dealer by collection date. then she can either inform her current insurer in advance that she wants to change cover from her current car to the new one, or even ring from the dealership when she picks up the car = that way the dealer will have the 7day cover, so they can tax the car, but your daughters own insurance will kick in, so she will be covered for business use

she wont have time to change the address on her V5 before monday. so please do not contact DVLA and do this, as it will cause so many discrepancies under the scrappage scheme

how old is your DD, as most free 7 day insurance policies dont cover people under 21

Daughter is over 21 so thats ok. If she phones her insurer she will be covered for the new car from the phonecall wont she even though she wont have the new docs but what you mean is the dealers 7 day cover will be enough for what is needed for them to tax and register the car to her? I was concerned it might be classed as having 2 insurances on the car at the same time but from what you say its ok.

Its just unfortunate timing with her moving a week later and not being asked for her new insurance details before now, as shes never bought a new car she didnt know. She will tell churchill that shes moving in 7 days after picking up the new car when she calls them to insure it, you never know they may do it all at once and only charge her for one change.

When getting the quote on the new car, when they ask the value of the car does she have to get cover for the price of the car before the scrappage is taken off which is £2000 or the amount she actually pays for it with the £2000 taken off? And is there anything else she should be carefull of or make sure is included when insuring the new car? as after insuring cars worth less than £1000 before now its a bit scary, just want to make sure its right

I did not know that new cars are taxed by the dealer, will this be for a whole year?

Somewhere in the price of a new car it will say O.T.R which means " on the road " so includes at least 6 months road fund, but more often 12 months.

She needs to tell the insurance the amount before the scrappage scheme decuction. Insurance dont care the ins and outs of how the final value of the car is made up, just the total amount.

tbh, most dealers are recommending gap insurance for cars bought on the scrappage scheme. now i know most people will say its just a sales ploy, but as yet, no insurance company will confirm whether they will pay out at current market value, or purchase price on a car bought on the scrappage scheme (most do base it on purchase price)

so for a gap policy costing £200, at least you know where you stand

tbh i dont know how the dealer can arrange a collection date for monday, when they dont have all the documents in place. most dealers tax the car a few days in advance of collection, so they know thats all ready to go

when did they expect to tax the car? when she turned up on monday, with the insurance doc in her hands?

having two insurance policies on one car, usually isnt possible, but because the 7 day ones, seem to go through the system so quickly, the overlaps dont seem to get picked up. your DD culd try getting a cover note from her current insurer, and hope that it gets here for monday. if not, she should be able to set up the 7 day insurance at the dealer. but this will involve some waiting around, as it can take up to an hour for the insurance docs to be emailed to the dealer, and for them then to issue the RFL
