    housing???????????????????????????
Anyone employed or sub contracting to H/A's for maintainance or repairs on social housing would be out of work and probably also need social housing as they could no longer afford to pay a mortgage?

Yeah, great idea. Whilst we're at it, we could also throw all wheelchair users on the floor, those who stand up are frauds! Also if you suspect someone is a witch, throw them in the lake and if they drown they're not a witch, if they float they are a witch and we can burn them at the stake!

You are a clot, i'll defend to the death your right to say it, but you're definately a clot

Field Marshal Clot, he could have chewed the fat with some of those brilliant WW1 senior officers  off you go Darling.
'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher

So .. sell of all social housing at the full market price to private landlords?
Most Social Housing would be sold with sitting tenants?
Some tenants would no longer be eligible for Housing benefit .. so no rental income.
Any private landlord who was daft enough to purchase these properties with sitting tenants then has to apply to get said tenants evicted?
    Brilliant idea!:T

Whilst I am contributing to this thread with some trepidation I'd just like to include the following thought:

TWH does not propose destroying any houses or creating any new households so the current balance between households and houses would not change so may be housing would become a lot cheaper all round as rents fall to the level at which landlords are able to fill their properties (any rent is better than a void) and may be purchase prices would fall to remain aligned so that rental yields remain appropriate and owning is not excessively more expensive than renting. So net effect would be a huge fall in house prices, some increase in homelessness but possibly a redistribution away from those with property to those without...is this what you had in mind TWH?!
    housing???????????????????????????
    I think....

But would they? Would they REALLY?

There would be swathes of cheap housing available in this country. It may not be the nicest, but it would be a roof over the heads of people unprepared to work to pay for one.

People in Single Sue's situation and those like her should never find themselves without a home which is why the opening post was, I still maintain, too sweeping a question to ask with too broad an answer to consider.

Those who NEED housing help should get it. Those who CHOOSE help with housing as opposed to choosing to work to secure it, shouldn't.

I and my children would be homeless and there would be nothing I could do to stop it as I am unable (not due to any of my own infirmity) to secure employment due to care needs and the pressures that puts on my time.

To put plainly, I would be up the creek without the proverbial paddle!

And I hate that, I really truly hate that I have to rely on benefits to be able to live and threads like this bring it home rather too clearly.
Sue love, there are people in this country who, like yourself, both genuinely NEED benefits and genuinely DESERVE benefits. There are people in this country who, like yourself, would rather work than live on benefits but find themselves unable to do so. That's admirable.

Sadly though, there are people in this country who don't NEED or DESERVE benefits and they certainly wouldn't rather work than live on hand outs.

It's those people I'd have no objection to seeing turfed out of their often fairly kushy council houses to be left to find a home for themselves and realise that benefits are there for people like you [Sue] and not people like them.

And there are others who are clearly in need of psychological help that also appear to led fully functional lives & even have their own property & money.

This is all too apparent on this board whenever social housing or benefits are discussed..
