CAT5 / CAT6 has more to do with electrical characteristics and technical performance. For normal domestic use, CAT5 is absolutely fine.

Also, STP is Shielded, whereas UTP is not, rather than STP being more shielded. Again, for domestic use, you have no need for STP cables at all.

have to agree for home applications cat5 is more than adequete and is used in most commercial situations too, i just replaced my cat 5 cabling 25m for the bargain sum of £3
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.
  • CAT6 supports upto 250Mhz (minimum, sometimes higher) with theoretical speeds of up to 10Gbit/Sec

CAT5e supports upto 100Mhz (minimum, sometimes higher) with proven speeds of 1Gbit/Sec

You'll probably find the cables you buy are Cat5e rather than CAT5. Whats the difference? - (e)hanced meaning it can handle disturbance on every pair making it suitable for gigabit. (uses all 4 pairs).

So for your PS3, your pretty safe to buy any mentioned above.
