family holiday without a car?

Thanks for all your replies. We are in north essex and have stayed in yarmouth many times. Not really interested in beach holidays as we are on the coast here. What other type of city accommodation is there? We'd need 2 hotel rooms wherever we went because there are 5 in our family - and generally family rooms are for 4
We can only go in school holidays too which bumps the cost up even more.
English hotels have a tendency to work out expensive for families due to the number of rooms required. When I was in my teens, we went to York and rented a two bed apartment for the weekend. That worked well and made for a nice break.
How long do you want to go away for? There aren't many cities that I'd recommend for much longer than a long weekend. London has plenty to keep you going for longer but could get expensive. Edinburgh is beautiful but a longer trek (I've done it by train though).0 -
An earlier posted suggested apartments, I would agree with that. I usually find that by the time you add the cost of the 2 or more hotel rooms, it is often cheaper to rent an apartment or house. And you get the added benefit of extra rooms to spread out in!
I have done this before in York, stayed in a property inside the wall and just 3 mins walk from the centre. Couldnt believe how convenient it was! We drove, but you could walk from the station (although about 20 mins or more as the station and the properties are on opposite sides of York), or splash out on a taxi.
Have a look at http://www.yorkholidayhomes.co.uk/locations.htm
We stayed in Turk Heads Court. There are plenty more houses/apartments you can rent in York, some nearer the station too I think. Have a look on Google for some ideas.0 -
If you're looking at somewhere like York or any other tourist city, look at family dormitories in a youth hostel. These are often centrally located and have self catering facilities and communal living areas as well. The hostel in York is lovely as is the one in Bath.0

Okay, maybe people might laugh, but I live near Newcastle (in Northumberland) and I think it's a good place to visit. It is packed full of students and so feeds into that youth thing. I've spoken to strangers on the street there and they've all been helpful and kind. Also, Edinburgh too. I've found good deals for both.
Sometimes good deals are hard to find, some places don't advertise them outwardly. I do apologise if someone already posted this but you can find cheap rooms
here: http://www.laterooms.com/
and: http://www.ibishoteldeals.com/ is doing a 50 % off deal with some of their hotels. I found a place for £25 (unfortunately couldn't go there though), it depends on the days you pick though, and there is a deal going for their York hotel. I can't say how good they are though.
I have had some good deals with travelodge and jury's inn too. You got to keep checking their website and book ahead. I heard travelodge was doing £9 and £19 rooms in April.0 -

I agree
we usually use the SUN cheapy holidays to book Butlins (Minehead)
but twice we have privately hired one of the static caravans, 4 bedrooms, and shared the cost between us and my sisters family
worth having a look0 -
have you ever tried a youth hostel, some have activities for the children in the school holidays on the website is says the distant from train stations. My children love yha and they now holiday with friends at them. last year you could use tesco vouchers to pay...you can book family rooms not just dormitories also most provide food reasonable priced.0
