family holiday without a car?

Can anyone recommend somewhere suitable for a family with kids 16, 14 and 11. Needs to be accessible by train as we don't have a car and buses are not an option due to travel sickness :( All the nice places suggested in other threads recently have been 10 miles or more from the nearest station which is really frustrating :(

What places have you all taken your teens to?

I don't have kids, but also don't have a car - I'd recommend Bath or York as both being places that have train stations close to the city centres, are compact and easy to get around without a car and have lots to see and do for all ages.

London has plenty going for it - and accessible by rail from just about anywhere. Walk, bus (if they can stand short distances) and tube around.

pleasure beach for kids, piers, shopping during the day,
  • Haven seashore in Great Yarmouth is within walking distance from the town, and would be possible to walk from the station to the site, look on google maps, its at the north end of the coast

Scarborough beach less than a mile from station, 15minutes walk away. Hotels nearby and also travel lodge 5 min walk. Museums and town centre close by too

Thanks for all your replies. We are in north essex and have stayed in yarmouth many times. Not really interested in beach holidays as we are on the coast here. What other type of city accommodation is there? We'd need 2 hotel rooms wherever we went because there are 5 in our family - and generally family rooms are for 4 :( We can only go in school holidays too which bumps the cost up even more.

York is nice place but dont think its cheap place to stay due to tourism. Well worth looking at railway museum close to station its free in a a nice day and also old street the shambles in city centre is very unique and very old medieval street. Castle museum is close to city centre as is Jorvick Viking musuem

York is a lovely city well worth a look

what about a Haven / Butlins type break ?

fab for kids / teens, lots to do onsite
And safe enough usually to allow your older children to wander and have a bit of freedom.

and you will only need one static caravan.Lots of the sites are close to the beach but many have things to see and do offsite,so you could look for other things to do in the locality and just use the site as a base :)

not sure which ones are close to a train station but if you go onto the site,it will tell you under "getting there "

eg this one ( I plucked one from the site at random!) is 3 miles from the train station :

The SUN £9.50 holidays start this week, and it's a good way of getting this type of break for cheaper, esp if like us you can only go during school holidays
