For those that are frugal, would it not be better to go to a local farm shop and pick up a selection of produce rather than have it delivered by one of these companies? Just a thought.

If you place your first order with Abel and Cole, they ask who recommended them to you, and that person receives a free bottle of extra virgin olive oil.

I am going to place my first order with them on Monday for delivery on Wednesday. First person that pm's me their name and already shops with Abel and Cole will get the free bottle of olive oil  :)

edit, I've bumped up the organic veg thread in the shop till you drop forum

  • Dear Friends,

I would be most grateful to anyone who can tell me where (Preferably in Surrey/Sussex/Kent area) I can buy Fresh Horse Radish root. I am willing to travel, but not as far as eastern Europe (where it is widely available).

    Cheers

    Hiya, welcome to MoneySaving :)

Waitrose often stock it when in season. Do you have one near you?

  • I don't have a garden, otherwise I would like to have a little vegetable patch, it's good to know that come the autumn I will be able to get one from waitrose.

Mind you, it is late autumn in the southern hemisphere, I will see if I can find someone who imports them.

    Cheers

    Hi There

I would love to buy an organic box each week, but unfortunately I just cant afford it. I buy weekly with groceries from either Asda/Waitrose or Tescos:

    Red Apples x 12
    Bananas 1.5kg
    4 Oranges
    3 Kiwis
    2 bunches grapes
    Melon
    5kg Spuds/sometimes i buy a sack and these last about 4-6 weeks
    2kg carrots
    Cauliflower
    Savoy Cabbage
    Iceburg Lettuce
    Cucumber
    Beetroot
    Spring onions
    3 Tomatoes
    5 Parsnips
    Mushrooms

If i was to buy these all organic-I would be bankrupt..lol  The above normally comes to around £11-12 depending on season and offers. I did total what it would cost if I bought all organic from supermarket and worked out about £21.00, if in a box over £35

I do buy organic if reduced or on offer, but I personally cant taste the difference! I always wash the fruit and veg before cooking or eating.

Organic from the supermarket is often more expensive than box schemes. Honest. Somehwere I posted the contents of my box for just four pounds. A good quantity of fruit and veg, a good price, and of course good food :)

It really would be worth your while contacting a local supplier through somewhere like www.bigbarn.co.uk and pricing a typical box. You might be pleasantly surprised. As mentioned elsewhere in the threads - if you have a farm shop near you they might be very competitive. Again, you might be able to find one through bigbarn.

I think this was the most recent Old Style discussion of box schemes.

I can recommend Cusgarne Farm, near Truro, Cornwall, for anyone who lives near me! I was paying £7 per week, including their own eggs and delivery. Only stopped when I had lots of my own produce...now I don't, so perhaps it's time to start again...and throw my meal planner to pot!!
