It must be new (ish), it didn't ask when I had to apply in 2006.

Do you know when she started claiming?

Years ago a neighbour of mine worked for the tax off ice and told me they had someone that took details from the cards in shop windows to see if they were people working on-the-side,so maybe this is the modern day alternative, they check ebay.

Ah right, I wouldn't know what the claim form said back then.

If it's right that she has just been selling her personal stuff and unwanted gifts/comp prizes, she has nothing to worry about as that's not a crime :)

Competition prizes are not taxable and can be disposed of in any way you see fit without incurring tax. If your sister googles her name, she might well be able to find winners lists that show at least some of the prizes.

I've also sold a few wins on ebay, as well as cosmetics that I've bought and not used, or free gifts from magazines. I'm a part-qualified accountant, so try to make sure that I follow all tax rules, but am quite happy that as long as I am only selling my own items (that were bought to use) then that is not acting as a business. Some of the items were bought to get Tesco points, so perhaps that is a grey area but I've given away most of these type of things and would have sold them at a loss so think this is OK.

Your sister needs to print off a list of what she's sold and write next to it where she got the items from, as far as she can remember. I don't think they would expect her to still have receipts, but if she does have any then that is good.

I wonder how long it will be before the Government realise what an excellent money spinning loophole this is an put a cap on how much you can earn this way or levy tax on it anyway.

Slight change of subject here, I have collected record for my own use for the last 25 + years and now probably have over 5,000. If I decided (which I am not) sell them all at one time, would I be liable to pay tax.

Likewise I just bought 450 albums, and I already have about 50 of them and am selling these off, would I be liable to pay tax?

If you decided to sell off your old records, you'd not be liable to income tax as you're selling private assets, though if you were to make more than £9600 in a year selling them you'd be liable to pay Capital Gains Tax on any excess.

With the ones you've just bought, I believe that the same applies, as you didn't buy them with the intention of reselling, but I would keep written records of your sales just in case anyone queries it along the line
