I'm wondering if my problem with feeding them is because I didn't trim them neatly enough. I did try to just push it in anyway but it made the machine stick, so the assistant came and pulled it out and gave it back to me, so I tried again with the next one and the same happened. I felt too embarassed to ask her because I hadn't bought the magazines and I was over 10% of the shopping, by quite a bit. But the machine did not want to take the coupons.

I just won't use any more of these. I certainly don't want to be accused of anything dishonest. Which incidentally is why I asked if I can use the coupons in the magazines without buying the items. In fact, this whole thread has made me feel using coupons for items I haven't purchased is slightly dishonest and I will feel like a criminal every time I do. I had never done it in my life before this weekend.

Know this is a bit off topic, but do the self-scan machines in Asda ask for a PIN number when you use a credit/debit card?

Ones in Tesco don't, and I was told by one of the employees that there is no form of authorisation when you spend less than £100 on them, anything greater than that you need to sign for it.

    Surely that's illegal?

I always have my coupons very neatly folded and quite small with the barcode just showing so they go down the chute easily and if it get stuck just blow down the chute.

I've used both self scanners, tesco just authorises it and asda you have to to enter a pin.

Not sure about the illegal part, but I suppose its at a risk to them not asking for a pin.

Dont be put off.I think a lot of us did get the wrong end of the stick initially. Personally yes I use coupons, I dont use the self scan and I only use up to 10%. In my opinion if the coupons are accepted by the store/sales assistant in the full knowledge that you have not purchased the item then it is not you who is commiting any crime. However I am of the opinion that the shop itself then goes on to commit fraud by claiming that they have accepted them as part payment for the goods as described!

Asda self scan today would only take 10% off my shopping, oh well off to Tescos for my points instead.

tescos self scans take more but if your going to do that i'd recommend several small shops as you would draw attention as they beep so much.
I believe stores take them as they dont make a loss but get to gain more custom in doing so.Its not really in their interest to have an official policy or manufacturers would complain.I think they have the manufacturers by the curlies to a degree the bigger the store chain. We are but their pawns.

Please don't panic about it, this is a good way of saving money and, as other posters here say, the store knows you are not buying the items in question so you are not doing anything wrong.

I always go to cashiers and have a bit of a giggle at the amount of coupons I fish out of my bag/pocket. Going to a cashier means the ball is in their court as to what they will accept and if you get the right young lad (not mature ladies!!!) they will happily scan much more than 10% on a good day. I just hold out my first few close-to-expiry coupons and say 'is there a certain number of coupons I can give you when I have not bought the product?'.

They sometimes answer with a set number (easy for you to then hand over your highest value £1.49 ones from this week's Real People magazine!) or they sometimes smile and say 'let's see what scans shall we?' - in which case you keep passing them coupons until you feel you have reached a fair amount! If they are a newbie cashier they may have to ask a colleague but that's OK, you'll always get something accepted at Asda or Tesco (well I do!).

I never feel guilty any more but I did the first time I did it (which was only this Spring although I'm quite knowledgeable now about what will scan etc). Funny thing is, the only time I felt really flustered was when I tried - once - to use Tesco self-scan. I was useless at even scanning the products, never mind scanning and shoving coupons in the slot...hated having to call for help in case I got one of the occasional 'jobsworth' anti-coupon brigade breathing down my neck. Never again!

Go on, try once more with a young male cashier (even better with evening staff, who are often students and not 'Tesco-thru-and-thru'!). If they are magazine coupons you only have a week or so to use them so what have you got to lose? :o
