Any advice? My dog been needing to wee constantly today

Hi all,

I will be taking my boy to the vets in th morning, just wondering if anyone out there is awake and has any ideas about giving him a bit of relief for now?

He is 2 years old, i took him out for a long run out this morning, since we have ben back he has been asking to go out about every 15-20 mins, i have watched him and he seems to be weeing every time he goes out.
has got more freuent as day has gone on.

Now the middle of the night, i go back to work tomorrow . I've been up and down all night, I've left some newspaper down but because he is such a clean boy he is trying to hold it in and crying to go out.

I am considering leaving the back door open for him and going back to bed...i need to sleep..
any ideas as to what this could be?

Thankyou!:confused::confused:

Stones? Make sure dog is actually weeing does he have a full bladder? If so it's an emergency trip now yes at 2am...

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • If he is actually weeing (and does not have a full bladder) it may just be a water infection - still, vets in the morning!

I agree if the dog hasn't been passing anything you must go to the vet and you should probably talk to the emergency vet in any case. Problem is with cystitis if it is bad enough you will only pass a tiny bit anyway so really for a vet to tell the difference.

Has he had diarrhoea at all? If so could be a water infection - if you have any Cranberry Classic juice left from Christmas you might see if he will drink that? That brand is best as it contains by far the most juice. Should be safe as they put cranberry extract in some dry pet foods. Be aware there is quite a bit of sugar in cranberry juice so not suited to regular use or diabetics etc. Cranberry only relieves temporarily it doesn't cure if there is an infection, so you would still need to see the vet tomorrow.

  • thankyou for your replies. He has been weeing small amounts when he goes out, i will keep a close eye on him and call the vets in the morning.

    Thanks again
  • Sounds like a urinary tract infection of some sort to me, you'll probably come home from the vets with anti-biotics.... if you get chance and have a suitable little pot, it might be useful to take a wee sample from the dog before you go and take it with you, that way the vet can put it under the microscope and have a look for the presence of bacteria, and also check for concentration levels and the presence of blood. It'll save you having to take a sample later and go back to the vets with it.

My dog has just finished a course of anti-biotics for cystitis so this is all quite fresh in my mind...
  • Thanks there goes trouble!

I have been on the phone to the vets this morning and they have asked me to get a sample before i go in...so i have been following my boy around the garden trying to catch some!lol He's not weeing much now so i have been giving him watered down milk as it is all he will drink today..awkwardness..

So have been wee'd on already and have a teeny drip in the bottle!lol..but it will all be worth it if we both get some propper sleep tonight!:o:T

Might seem like a daft question........:o

But have you got snow there? ;)

Because our 1yr old dog needed to go out for a wee loads on Xmas eve and we thought oh dear he might have an infection or something. But then we realised he had been eating snow every time he went out and then needed to wee again on & on........!!!

So we have had to go back to going with him and taking him out on the lead again so he can't eat any snow and he is ok now! Although it's such a pain as we had trained him well to go on his own in the garden so now we have to go with him again and hang around in the snow and freezing weather -6.5 here last night!!

So obviously I am willing the snow to go asap!!:D It's such a shame really as he loves bouncing around in it but we can't let him do that much because he then eats a load of snow needs to wee again etc. etc.!!

    Hope he gets better soon.

Hope you managed to get a sample...my dog had similar problems & it was a urine infection/cystitis. It flaired up very quickly & he had blood in his urine, so quite scary. I think my dog's problem may have been connected to having steriod tablets for a wet eczema outbreak after swimming in dirty water.

I found the easiest way to collect a sample was by using a dustpan (which i had thoroughly cleaned & rinsed beforehand). Because of the shape of it, i was able to easily pour it into a bottle without getting it everywhere!

Catlou - my dog does the same, constantly peeing when we have snow as he keeps eating it! It all started when my son threw a snowball & he caught it & ate it :)

    Hope he's better soon....

  • Well, we have been to the vets and...he has a water infection, there was quite a bit of blood showing in the sample apparantly.

The vet said it is quite rare for Male dogs to get this type of infection.
I think it may have something to do with his constant(daily) need to submerge himself in the most stagnant disgusting water/mud pit he can find!

Anyway I am now £75 lighter:(:( for 5 min appointment and 5 days worth of antibiotics, but hopefully my boy will be feeling a bit better by tomorrow and i may even get a bit of sleep tonight.

Thanks for all advice and reassurance:D

Can I recommend you get hold of some probiotics? Antibiotics wipe out the beneficial gut flora as well as the nasties lurking in the bladder, so your dog will be at greater risk of stomach upsets or re-infection without a speedy repopulation. You can either buy LactoB from an online pet store or give a part dose of the human version - acidophilus from Holland & Barrett. I had recurrent cystitis for months, stopped only by a combination of cranberry and acidophilus. :D
