Okay this is Moggins snippet for the week
I don't know about the rest of you but I've got highly tired of feeling like a hamster on a wheel, everyday I seem to repeat the same old chores and keeping a house clean is like painting the Forth Bridge - once you finish it's time to start again.
Something I read in a new book I bought last week struck a chord as I remembered my mother housekeeping this way too.
And it is?
Certain chores for certain days.
Obviously not the ones that need doing daily like washing up and cooking and making beds (although you could bulk cook on a day when you have plenty of time and freeze it) but the biggies like the washing, ironing, shopping etc could be given designated days that way we always know what needs to be done on any given day.
Obviously peoples days are going to be different so it's no point me posting lists but for an example I've sorted mine out to be
Monday - washing, hoovering, cleaning floors
Tuesday - paying bills, office work etc
Wednesday = Shopping, because the market is on.
Thursday - Mending, baking, hoovering
Fri - Washing only as I take the parents shopping that day
Saturday - Free Day
Sunday - Ironing
It takes 3 weeks to make a habit and 6 weeks to make it a lifelong one.

And to think we can all say we knew you before!:D

I've been reading this with some interest, and I will give it a valiant go, but I don't immediately see how all my tasks will possibly fit in only one week, maybe I need a two weeker task spread. I have a 10, 7 and 5 year old, and neither myself nor hubby are naturally tidy either (is it genetic?).
The mess seems to be generated far faster than I can clear it, and there certainly doesn't seem to be any time for doing much for myself without ignoring the daily tidal wave of gubbins.
My only solution would be to be a minimalist, but I am a magpie maximalist.....oooer that maths doesn't work
Any of you tidy lot want to give me lessons....?0 -

I've just read through page 3 twice and can't find the link, which is https://www.flylady.com. I first came across this on these pages where (mainly) women were discussing how much time they spent cleaning. I posted a joking reply saying that as a man I only dusted when the cobwebs became too thick and only hoovered when I couldn't see the carpet for breadcrumbs - the joke wasn't too far from the truth. But I DID follow the FlyLady link - exactly 3 months ago - and now I can only rave about it and recommend it to EVERYONE. My house is now a really clean and tidy home and all I do is JUST 15 MINUTES DAILY from Monday to Friday, saving the entire weekend for fun. I now it sounds an exaggeration, but just click on the link, read a little, give it a go for a couple of weeks, and see just how effective it is. What have you got to lose???
Incidentally, thanks to Martin for all the tips on saving and earning interest whilst your debts and spending chug along at 0%. Using these ideas I have (a) wiped out my overdraft, (b) moved all my debts forward to October next year at 0%, and (c) paid off the mortgage in full a fortnight ago!!! From an indebted financial disaster in a messy, scruffy house to a properly budgeted person in a clean and tidy and welcoming home in just six months! Initial Debt = £9,700 (at 15.9%)
Net Debt at April 4 = [£9,680 (0%) less £2,905 (4.5%)] = £6,775
:jDebt-free Date = 25 December 2006:j£2.00 Coin Savers Club = £30 (of which £20 banked)

I agree with church mouse high up on my wish list for the lottery is fresh line dried and ironed sheets daily (washed etc by someone else!!) There is no better feeling in the world than having a bath putting on a clean nightie and getting into a clean fresh bed - utter bliss! Maybe it stems back to childhood christmas eve ritual of bath, new nightie and the excitement of christmas morning looming.
Back to the main topic I try to do the big housework jobs i.e bathroom, hoovering bedrooms, changing beds etc on a friday to leave the weekends free for gardening trips out etc. Downstairs hoovering is done daily ( 10 yr old is incapable of finding her mouth when eating anything crumbly!) Dusting is also done on a friday or when needed(usually when the sun shows it up!!) The kitchen is kept clean daily as a necessity. Laundry is done on mon, weds and friday to fit in with school uniforms, swimming/pe kits etc. Ironing i truly hate so try to blitz it when time allows while watching a dvd. As the ironing board has to be put up in the living room it has to be done during the day or it is in everyones way. I do find this a more effective way of doing things as it does occasionally leave me with free time. I've now just got to try to stop feeling guilty and using my free time to help other family members!!!0 -

Something I do to help with the drudgery of housework is I fit it into 15min "slots" in which I see how much I can do in that 1/4 hr, i.e. 15mins tidying the kitchen before moving onto 15 mins tidying the bathroom. After 2 15min slots I sit down & reward myself with 5mins of a puzzle or reading a newspaper article etc. Then back to it. it's amazing how much you end up doing in 15 mins because you know you are only stuck on that job for a relatively short period of time. I give myself a bigger reward after 2 more 15min slots like a cup of tea or a choccie bikkie. I use the timer on the microwave & it's the best sound in the world after a hard 15 mins graft!!!!0
