Car trade-in?

Hi
My mother has packed in driving at the age of 80 and given me her 7 year old Rover 25 car for my wife to learn to drive in. The car has low mileage, 19k, is generally sound mechanically and runs well.
My concern, though, is the Rover has shockingly bad safety features with no ABS, airbags and also has manual windows, no air con etc.
I am considering taking it to a dealership to enquire about a trade in for a more 'safe' car but I guess I need to take into account the fact that this will cost us money of course and we could opt to stick with this basic car until my wife passes her test.
What trades-ins are out there, I don't know,- any ideas?
Many thanks.

so it doesnt have abs or airbags? so what. if you can learn to drive without the use of dumb driver aids like abs then you will be a better driver rather than relying on electronic aids to assist you.
having said that it is a rover and i would be inclinde to get rid of it as soon as possible before the head gasket fails. even with its low mileage....work permit granted!0 -
Keep it and dont crash. Use the seat belts and manually wind down the windows if it gets too hot in the summer. At least you wont burn yourself on a leather interior.
Trade in value? A lot less than you probably are thinking.
I'd try to sell it privately to someone learning to drive or just passed. It's probably perfect for that.0 -
If it has been serviced as required (ideally every year but even if it was only every 2 years) I would keep it, its not worth much but it is worth a bit to you as you know its history. It's a perfectly good car to learn to drive in and use till it dies afterwards.0

Exactly. Just imagine that there is a big spike sticking out of the middle of the steering wheel, you'll not want to crash then!
As others have said, it's worth pretty much sod all, maybe a couple of hundred quid, so just run it into the ground, you'll probably get a few years worth out of it.0 -
Head went on my Rover at 18000 miles(in the days when i didnt know much!!) Am thinking of a new one:beer:0

im suprised it has no air bag for a 2002/3 car I thought most had one even if like my car its just for the driver, the way Id look at it is it cost nothing so use it & be very careful.
The lack of electric windows is one less thing to go wrong isnt it & Im sure I read somewhere the reliability rating for the 25 & 75 was fairly good.Theres only two rules to remember1) Im always right2) See rule 10 -
Definately keep it. Its worth nothing much in money, especially if you trade it in, but it sounds like a fine first car.0

a free car to learn to drive in and you're considering giving it away or selling it????
Are you mad!?!?
Definitely keep it. It may not be worth much but that's something you'll appreciate it if the car is bumped.

Im with darich...your car is worth next to nothing as a trade in, keep it and run it into the ground.0 -
you'd be lucky to get £150-£200 as a trade in, and you be looking at spending over £1500, if your wife is learning to drive its an ideal car to have, it cost you nothing so it keep it a year then look for something new, all new drivers have the odd car park bump, scuff etc better on the freebie than the paid carEveryones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0
