Epilators - a few questions

Thanks for everyone's replies. I'm tempted to try one as I'm getting fed up of shaving, I used to get my legs waxed but stopped to save money. I went on Amazon and saw one that sounded good, it was reduced from £75 to £28 and had great reviews, was going to get it but then I started dithering and the next day it had gone up to £48:(

Use mine on legs and Bikini
Hurts - not very much at all other then along the shin bone, but then so does shaving and waxing ( Im getting old and I think skin is thinning slightly now)
I dont stay hair free for very long - perhaps a week but I dont itch like I do if I shave.

hey I've had my braun silk epil epilator for almost 2 years and I haven't reverted to shaving in that time at all and I don't think I ever would.
Firstly, it does hurt but it gets easier. it hurts me most around my ankles and on the inside of my calf. But I'm a complete wimp with pain and if I can manage it, anyone can. I just do my legs and any stray hairs on my tummy and toes.
I find it lasts on my legs for about 2 wks and then I can notice the hair is growing back again. Although, it is very fine and I tend to go about 3-4 wks in total before doing it again.
I'd say go for it, Id never go back to shaving because of how often I used to have to do it and how much irritation it caused.

I love my epilator it does hurt a bit at first but you get used to it. I have used one for years now and they last for years. I have much less hair and use mine on my legs, arms, bikini line and underarms. My sister converted me and then i converted others. Though my mum uses the nad wax products and this works well too and lasts ages. You can buy them online.MFW 2016 No 68 £1300/£8500 No new toiletries Cook sth different0

I also have a Braun silk epil and would highly recommend it. I first tried a cheaper model and found it too painful. And although it does sting at first I am now completely used to the sensation and with the Silk Epil it doesn't hurt at all. (Except my bikini line which I still can't bear). It lasts much longer than shaving, can be done on very very short hairs and really reduces regrowth. Pulling the skin taught helps with the pain and gets a better result.
Although you want to go quickly it's actually more effective if you go slower.
It's more effective and less painful on shorter hairs, the longer the hair the more the more painful. If unsure shave first and epilate a few days later.
Would definately recommend it and personally would never go back to waxing or shaving.0

I got one about a year ago on a half price thing, tried it once, nearly cried and never used it again! But I have vowed to make use of it this year and used it on my legs for the second time just now.
I must say, it was much less painful than last sunday with the hairs being shorter, but I do still feel stubbly (I guess this must be the next set of regrowth coming through).
I'm hoping if I do it everytime the hairs get long enough, eventually they will all grow back much finer? Am I thinking right??
The most painful bits for me are the backs of my knees and just below, on the back of my leg. Haven't dared to do my underarms yet!

Mine came with a "beginners" head which is intended to break you in gently. It has fewer rotating discs and a smaller area so fewer hairs are caught each time. I didn't bother with it on my legs as they are used to waxing but it significantly reduced the pain the first few times elsewhere.:p0

I have an epliator, its by Braun and I cannot remember the style name but came with a "cold mit" which you leave in the freezer and use on your legs afterwards.
My main gripe is that dispite its 3 separate heads, I cannot do under my arms! I have tried but I just end up with blood everywhere and no hairs removed.
My legs are not too painful to do but I still prefer to home-wax with the strips from Veet (Boots and Superdrug are useless in this department). I do have to psyche myself up for using the epliator- more so then if I were to wax. I find you can get used to it if you use it frequently but once you stop for a while its like your pain threshold returns back to where it was before.
What did scare me was one lady a the gym who began to use her epilator in the changing rooms (gross I know but thats not my point) others were asking her if it hurt, how long did it take to grow back...etc etc, she said the pain has gone, her nerves maybe died or something and that (her words not kine) the scars are barely noticeable. She showed us her legs (to show us how smooth they were) covered in scars. She said they had faded and that she was used to them but OMG I never have seen ingrowing hair scars before, I always get ingrowing hairs, always find myself itching and scratching by mistake- there lies the problem. Yes I hate having so many hairs, but the scars? they are there for life. And so I'll stick to waxing which for some reason does not give me a fraction of the ingrowing hairs that I get on my legs.
I am lucky I have a shaver included in the epilator or the whole thing would be useless to me! I've not epilated in years!0

Ingrowing hairs don't have to be a problem, exfoliate everyday and slap on loads of moisturiser every night. Exfoliating using a mitt and soap no need to be expensive or time consuming.0
