Epilators - a few questions

I've often thought of trying an epilator but have been put off in case I don't get on with it.

For those that have used them

Are they as painful as you would expect?

Does it take a long time to do?

How long do the effects last?

Any recommendations for epilators?

Thanks

Great thead!!! I've been thinking about getting one myself and the exact same questions you asked have also gone through my mind too.

I've read that it isn't as painful as it sounds but I'd love to know the truth :o

My skin is very sensitive the day after I shave my legs, this makes them itchy and then they look terrible. I've tried waxes, creams, sugaring, razors... but they all have the same effect!! Does anyone think/know if an epilator would be worth a try?
Even if you stumble, you're still moving forward.
  • I have an epilator, mine is a Phillips Satinelle - though I have had it for years.

If you have never used one before I think it is a good idea to shave first and then use the epilator a day or two later to get the hairs when they are really short.

I used to find it painful, but not any longer. I find the more I use it the sparser the hair has become. I have some parts of my legs with virtually no hairs there now.

I probably only use it about once a month, more often in the summer if I am going with bare legs. I also use it on my toes, bikini line, underarms (makes my eyes water) and have used it on my upper lip.

I can sometimes have problems with ingrowing hairs, but if I use a body scrub and moisturise my legs well, this reduces the problem.

Compared to waxing I find it a lot less painful. I could easily go a month without using it, but as the hairs are all at different stages of growth you will always get a few growing here and there.

I would buy another one if this one broke, but it has been going strong now for at leat 5 years.

Mine is a Phillips too and I use it for legs and bikini. Came with an ice pack which eases pain as you go, though I can use it without the ice pack for my legs - its more of a tingle than painful, especially once you are used to it.

For me its not as convenient as shaving, but I do prefer epilating as the results last.

I bought mine last summer on offer and after some advice from a friendly sales assistant at Boots! Something to consider when you buy is whether you want one you can charge up and use cordless - some have to be plugged in for use (I chose cordless so I can sit over the bath to do my legs).

Just how short can the hairs be, as I wax my bikini line but even with waxing the results only last a couple of weeks then I have a another couple of weeks of 'stubble' before the hair gets long enough to wax again.

So can you epilate very shot hairs?

Epilating is super! Persevere as its most painfull when you start. I can do my underarms with no pain at all now. An epilator should be able to get hairs that are 2mm long. Some are better than others. I "pluck" about once a week.

I have epilated for about 7 years and started off with a basic model an emjoi one and now i have got a braun silk epil which i bought because it had a shaver as well for trimming.

TBH the first hit you do is painful ish but i find my skin sort of gets a bit numb as i go through it, my shins always tingle the most, but on future go's i can't really feel it.

I do my legs, bikini and underarms regulary....my legs for a clean smooth feel need to be done once a week, but i have to shave everyday for this result so once a week is better for me as i'm lazy. My armpits etc last ages though.

I do get some ingrown hairs but nothing that bugs me only a couple, but i would say my epilator tends to break fine hair rather than remove from the root.

You can also do your hairs from very short as well, i do anyway. The first time you do it will take ages. But following times i can do my legs in about 15 mins and underarms less than 5 mins. HTH xx

I have one- have tried it numerous times and just cannot get used to it- i have tried every trick in the book to make it bearable but it is still one of the most painful things i can think of doing to myself. Even swigging half a bottle of gin and religiously rubbing the included ice pack over my burning legs didn't help!! Plus for me it took ages to do my legs- prolonging the pain even further. The effects lasted about the same as a wax- red and lumpy for a few days. (i also bled!!!)

So to cap it off....it is still sitting snuggly in the back of my 'useless electrical appliance' draw!! Probably to never see the light of day again!!

I have one and use it on my unerarms and legs. It was a little painful at first but as you use it more it's less painful (or you are more used to it, whichever)

I find that hairs come back finer and less. I use it about once a week or so and if theres a special ocasion coming up that I need my legs out for I will do a "top up" lol

I tried it on my bikini area once, that was enough! Hurt far too much so I have never tried again!

I think they are great. They hurt for about the first minute then it doesn't really hurt at all. Underarms are more tender than legs though so they hurt a bit more.
