snow and ice

There's no need to clear the snow if they just put down some grit around the disabled spaces. At least that gives the shoes something to hold onto. I know that's what we've done at our callers office. Worked well until we run out of grit. But as the supermarkets in this area haven't had any salt on their shelves for the past 4 weeks, I doubt if they have any grit either.4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0

The supermarkets will have a duty of care to the public (that can be reasonably expected to come into contact with their operation) under Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Under the Management of H&S at Work Regs, they should have carried out an risk assessment of hazards associated with there site and also put in place "reasonably practicable" control measures. Gritting a supermarkets car parks is just one control measure, amongst numerous they could take. They have no obligations to do anything so long as they are satisfied that they can demonstrate to the enforcement authorities that they have taken adequate precautions.
There are no hard a fast rules, Risk Assessments are a quite subjective and dependant on the competence of the assessor. My farts hospitalize small children0 -
Ok.
You're the manager of a supermarket. You've got to keep the shelves stocked, the checkouts manned. You're also keeping an eye on the weather because some of your staff live in outlying areas and are getting to work late or asking to get home early. You've got quite a few staff on holiday too.
So who are you going to take off normal duties to keep the car park & pavements ice free ? And what effect do you think that will have on your core business ?
Go on, tell us, you're the experts.
The supermarkets can employ the services of a contractor which would do this for them. I can name at least five companies that would be happy to entertain a contract with any of the major supermarkets. The Facilities Managers and Properties teams at the Supermarkets are more than aware of this. It's a calculated financial decision that they have taken not to Grit.
As a consumer, it is important that any controls measures that they put into place (signage, designated walkways etc) are followed so as to avoid accusations of contributory negligence.
If the consumer isn't satisfied, then they can vote with the wallets and shop elsewhere that meets with the expectations. My farts hospitalize small children0 -
You would think with the massive profits that supermarkets make from the public, that they could at least salt all their car parks and parking bays, especially the disabled bays but as usual they don't care.
Maybe they are thinking that if someone slips over they will sell some more plasters or something????0 -
Our Morrisons had the entire carpark cleared of ice the day it froze, but sadly as our cr aapy council is useless, the roads were unpassable to actually get there unless you wished to risk the ice rink which was once a pavement!:rotfl:Ahahah got my signature removed for claiming MSE thought it was too boring :rotfl:0

I worked for Sainsbury's Facilities Management and they work it by checking weather forecasts. If a certain temp hit then they sent gritters out to do the car parks. The flip side of sanity is the game.0
