New house - SKY+ box left - can I use it?

Hello, wondering if someone could help please?

I've never used SKY before so I hope this isn't a ridiculously stupid question. :o

We are moving house next week and I know that the owners of the place we are moving to had SKY and they told me they'd be leaving behind their SKY+ box.

Will I be able to use the box like a Freesat box without subscribing to SKY?

Thanks for any help.

You will be able to use it to watch a single channel at a time but not be able to use the recording part without a subscription to sky.

And yes you will be able to watch any of the freeview channels.
  • Yes you will, but without an active subscription you won't be able to use the Sky+ recording facilities.

If there's no card in the box, you won't get FIVER, FIVEUS and Sky3. Depending on where you live, you might not get FIVE or your local ITV region either, but they can be added in manually if need be.

You also may not be able to subscribe to the sky channels as the box will show up on the old home owners account.
  • Wow, that was quick! ;) Thank you!

Good to know re not being able to use the recording facility.

Might go for a Freeview box with hard drive instead then. Or a Freesat one.

    Thanks again.

If you've got kids, the's some good free games on the interactive (beehive bedlam is addictive!) but make sure you disconnect the phone line from the box or you're phonebill may go up with the pay ones.
  • Thanks.

Just thought of something else -

if the previous owners had SKY+, does that mean they must have had two feeds coming in from the dish? So that if we did get a Freesat recording box, would we be able to watch one thing and record another??
