What do i need?

Options
What USB memory stick will i need?.......

Im not very good when it comes to computers, was just wondering if anyone could advise me on what to buy to store my pictures on? Instead of clogging up my computer?

Is a memory stick the best option?, also what gb would i need? How many photos can be stored per 1GB? And where can i buy one from? I don't want to spend too much though.

Thanks, Hope someone can help :)

If you're simply buying one to not 'clog' up your PC then it's not required. All you need to do is save them somewhere on your PC that makes sense to you e.g. My Documents -> My Pictures -> 2009, 2010 etc

If however you want a memory stick to use for backups, giving you the opportunity of carrying your photos with you etc. then I'd go for something like this:

Sandisk 16GB Cruzer USB Flash Drive
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sandisk-16GB-Cruzer-Flash-Drive/dp/B001XURP8G/ref=pd_ts_ce_6?ie=UTF8&s=electronics
    Price: £17.29

    Similar, cheaper, smaller models:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-8GB-Micro-Cruzer-Retail/dp/B000VBPOKY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1262458063&sr=1-2
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-4GB-Micro-Cruzer-Retail/dp/B000PD4H38/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1262458063&sr=1-6

An average photo size from a digital camera would be 1MB - 2MB so that's about 750 pictures on average.
  • Thanks for your help davidmt83.

Does your computer have a CD or DVD writer? Why not store your pictures on CD or DVD?

Okay let's say an average picture size is 1.5MB. You have a total of 16GB which actually equates to 14.92GB fresh out of the box (there are reasons for this not being 16GB but I won't bore you with them unless you're interested.)

    So 1 GB = 1024 MB
    14.92 GB = 15,278 MB
    1 Picture = 1.5 MB
    15,278 / 1.5 = 10,185 photos
  • So 1 GB = 1024 MB
    14.92 GB = 15,278 MB
    1 Picture = 1.5 MB
    15,278 / 1.5 = 10,185 photos[/QUOTE]

    A 16 gb will hold 10,185 photos ??

Correct. A lot isn't it! While we're here an average MP3 file is 5.5 MB.

No problem. I would definately suggest ensuring you backup all your important data every so often, maybe weekly, maybe montly depending on how often it changes, to ensure you don't lose those all important personal files.
