How much do I need to move out

I hate living at home and want to move out.....
I want to live in leeds in a rented accommodation by myself, 1 bedroom apartment/studio rent about 350-400 per month. How much will I need to save, I have a degree but no job and live in derby. I also have a car, should I get rid of it (insurance is 70 per month)

Why do you want to live alone, have you considered a shared house? Why Leeds? How are you going to pay the rent without a job? Do you need a car for the sort of jobs you are applying for? How are you paying for the car without a proper income? You will need at least a grand to move into your own flat - one month's deposit plus one month's rent plus a little to play with (removals/ setting up landline etc). Much more if you rent unfurnished.

You'll need enough to be able to pay deposit plus 1 month rent plus the fees the agency charges and enough to stock up the fridge and cupboard with food and to purchase linen/towels and other bits and bobs. I'd say about £1,000.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

As regards ongoing monthly costs, as opposed to the initial set-up cost, have a look at this thread too

To be honest, it's doubtful that any landlord would take someone unemployed. Make getting a job your first priority.

If it's an unfurnished place and you don't have things like a fridge, washing machine, sofas etc it could run to thousands upfront even before the first months rent, deposit (usually about 6 weeks), agency fees etc which all have to be paid. I'd guess you'd then need another thousand or so per month for rent, bills, food.

I am not a people person, I could not bear the thought of living in a shared accommodation. Leeds looks better then derby. I would get a job within a month or so. I suppose the car could come in handy for a job, or it could be a liability. I pay for my car through scrimping and saving.

I have about 2000 Pounds saved up, with another 2000 Pounds in assets, do you think this is enough, I really need to get away from this place.

Thats a good thread I will read it.
  • Do you know anyone in leeds?
If so I would suggest staying with them for a while and checking it out before moving

Also you dont know you will get a job in a month of two you will find yourself in big trouble if you dont manage to. If you are scrimping for £70 Insurance you will never make the £400 rent, council tax, tv licence, gas and elec payments.

Im sorry to put a downer on your plans but there is nothing like the fear that you can not pay your rent it truely horrible i should know.

Get a job, save up some money - then move

How will you get around? Is it actually worth anything?
  • You may find landlords are more reluctant to rent out to someone who is unemployed. I would personally secure a job first and have a buffer of money ( you dont need a huge amount) then move out.
