I dont see any reason why a 1.4 litre car is no good for people with families. There are many different models of car out there from 3 door minis to 5 door estates -

Please direct me to a 5 door estate car within the CC limits that has three full seatbelts in the back, is less than 13 years old, has enough boot space for a pushchair, not built like a tin can and is under £1,000.

You can get the Vauxhall Astra H estate with a 1.4 engine (OK not £1000 but £2500-£3000 for spaceship mileage)- but as I said above I'd doubt it's powerful enough to be safe .

My budget would be £1,000 any more than that and i'd have to sell my furniture :o

My 2.0 has low mileage and it came with new mot at just over 1k.

You seem to realise that the engine size relates to the safety of the car, at least someone here does!

  • imagine being so poor you could only afford a 1.1 or even had to get the bus

Driving a 1.0 Corsa D hire car did that to me.

Don't think I've ever been so scared accelerating up a motorway slip road

dont you mean think rather than realise??

Im off the opinion it doesnt matter about the engine you can still kill people with a 1.0 if you run them over, the car is irrelevant, as i have already said it the 1.4 limit is introduced its just another government way of pushing people to lower emmisions cars to reduce the C02 level, nothing more
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

a new 1.0 car is far more powerful than a 1.0 of say 20 years ago, i recently had a 1.4 meriva on hire and that went like stink easily reached motorway----ish speeds :p and round town was pokey enough to pull out of junctions without any hesitation. The 1.0 corsa is really a town car, but can easily handle motorways when its needed to

The engine size is not relative to the safety of the car, the overriding factor in safety is the drivers ability.

Not far more powerful than a 10 year old one using exactly the same engine but weighing 200kg less, though.

The 1.0 Corsa D is downright dangerous IMHO - and there are similar cars out there from other manufacturers.

    Not if driven properly.
