Driving test changes in 2010

So what's all that about then?I have had lessons in a nissan micra, (which was horrible to steer) a vauxhall corsa, where i felt like my bum was dragging on the road, an Isuzu trooper, which was great, a ford galaxy that i loved but could not afford to run, and now my own volvo.
I have never lost control of my car. I drive calmly and safely, not accelerating like a maniac then suddenly braking.
The volvo's winter mode increases the grip in bad weather.
I am not a boy racer and 'putting my foot down' is only ever done when joining the flow of traffic on a dual carriageway.
I don't wish to be lumped in with a bunch of spotty kids in burberry hats thanks.
I was only explaining my interpretation of things.
You have never lost control of your car. That's good. Can you please confirm that you are never going to lose control of your car in the future?
No-one is trying to lump you together with anyone... other that when you have passed your test you will be a relatively inexperienced motorist, together with lots of others.0 -

As for being lumped in with a bunch of spotty kids, you wont be you'll be a driving noob same as everyone else that will have to comply with the new test, you cant be excluded because you may think your a better driver/person/whatever
I don't think I'm 'better' than anyone and you've misread me a bit.
Yes my car is a powerful car, but after THREE YEARS of driving lessons (because i wanted to be able to do it safely, not just pass the test, they're not one and the same)i control it quite capably, I should not have to sell and drive a tin can that will kill my kids if some muppet decides to shunt me at a junction.Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession

Irrelevent.Maybe you would like to try loading three children and all their stuff into a nissan micra??
Irrelevent.It's not pretty,
A Peugeot 306 is/was available with a 1.1L and a 1.4L engine.I cannot manage on anything smaller than a peugeot 306 and that's a squeeze, and still bigger than 1.40 -

Well you may also lose control of your car, but you have been able to drive a car with any engine size

Irrelevent.
It's relevant to me i have three children!
Irrelevent.
I didn't relate to the appearance of the car, to the experience of getting car seats in one when you're standing at the front of the car and when you're 5ft7 it's hard to get in the back and do it.
A Peugeot 306 is/was available with a 1.1L and a 1.4L engine.
As I said, that's still a squeeze.Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession

Correct.Well you may also lose control of your car, but you have been able to drive a car with any engine size
And when I passed my test I didn't have to wear a seat belt. There was also no 70mph speed limit and airbags were unheard of.
These things have all been added over time to improve safety.
If you think the current proposals are not the right thing, then write to your MP.
For what its worth, I think anything that saves lives should be considered.0 -

i think you are totally missing the point, your saying that because you chose to have lessons for 3 years that entitles you drive a more powerful car. What i am saying is that if these changes are introduced when you pass your test YOU WILL HAVE TO DRIVE A 1.4 for a year regardless to wheter you took the minimum 1 year of driving lessons or you took driving lessons for 20 years, thats what they are proposing, not me!!
Whilst you may consider yourself to control the car very capably the government doesn't they are basically saying that all new drivers will only be allowed to drive a 1.4 so they can increase there skills
Why do i feel like you can only see one side of the coin?? You dont think cash on collection should be banned aswell do you??Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

No, because it saves on Paypal fees, and I've never had any trouble buying or selling with it
I know it's what the government say, doesn't mean i have to agree with it.
I feel there should be an exception for your own children, maybe there will be
Fortunately for me and the kids I am looking to do my test in Feb or March.
ETA: 17 year old boy racers can kill themselves just as well in small cars as they can in big ones. Maybe someone should tell Mr.Brown :rolleyes:Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession

Yes, you most definitely are missing the point.I don't think I'm 'better' than anyone and you've misread me a bit.

The proposal, not my proposal I might add, is that newly qualified drivers should be restricted to a less powerful car. The reason, as I understand it, is to protect other road users from from the lesser experienced driver.

id suggest to anyone to get there test done ASAP, i for one wouldnt be happy with a 1.4 with my current family situation nor would i be happy with only 1 passenger at a time.
On the other side of the coin i can see why the government/DSA think its a good idea, but i dont think they will be able to police it especially the no more than 1 passenger or lower speed limits for new drivers. But then all these good ideas are just that good ideas from someone sat behind a desk with no concept of the real world.
The only thing they really need to do is make the test more stringent, its a practical test so you cant really cheat you have to prove your competence before passingEveryones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0
