Create a system restore point before tinkering. Provided that you are adding rights, rather than removing, you shouldn't cause any problems.

Are there any subkey values that hint at restrictions
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

    Under the
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel key

there is another called Restrictions:in the right hand side it shows 2 entries:
    Name...Type......Data
    Default Reg_SZ (value not set)
    and

    Name....................Type................Data
    NoBrowserOptions....Reg_DWORD......0x0000001 (1)

Did that (thanks albertross!) and have now regained "control" on Tools/Internet options at least!
But it still refuses to let me choose my own Homepage  .

I have a feeling I have a bit more googling and registry tweaking to do to get what should be the most basic, simplest of browser options ie:setting my own homepage under my control!

Anyway thanks for everyones help, I'm off to sleep now and will try to fix this tomorrow..if it's possible:P.

If I get anymore headaches from Microsoft software I might reach for Linux instead of Nurofen :p !

A workaround is to create a new shortcut with the url on the command line

    e.g.

    "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" https://www.google.co.uk

Something strange going on here...my homepage won't change now (currently set to "Google"). Whatever I do it always reverts to that. I've never had this problem before.
Nothing comes up on Spybot when I run it.
I am using the free version of ZoneAlarm - does that have some kind of protection to stop the homepage being hijacked which might cause it? If so I can't find it!
I'm so desperate I'm even thinking of downloading the Microsoft anti-spyware stuff!
