What does retain a day mean?

you're right i'm making it complicated but it is all complicated to me as ive always had a straight forward contract before this job.
I work 5 days a week so since i worked 4 days then had christmas and boxing day off i booked the sunday as a holiday to make it up to 37.5 hrs.
So if i used boxing day as normal day off, i'm assuming christmas was another, but if they say to retain christmas day does that mean i should have had another day off that week or be owed it? if i'm still confusing then no worries i'll have to wait until i can speak to the boss
 Right...
...I see what you have done here although whether I can make that make sense in words is a different matter
Basically you have used 25th/26th as your normal 2 days rest and the 27th as your holiday to make your 5 day week.
As long as you have only booked one days holiday for that week then you are ok - however, if your employer has used your retained day for the 25th then you didnt need to book the 27th and yes, you should be owed a day.
Unfortunately, your employer is the only one who can confirm if they have done this or not.
 Hope that makes sense

and thats how i shouldve explained it!
I'll have to wait for an answer, if they've retained a day they probably wouldve told me as it says im obliged to retain it so therefore i did have it as a normal day off (as i didnt request it to be taken from hol allowance)
as well as boxing day and then took holiday on sunday to make up the hours so i dont think i'm owed anything. I'll have to double check though, thankyou so much!!0

You are making a meal of this. You can choose when to take 29 or 32 days and the remaining day is Christmas Day.Holiday entitlement is 30 days per financial year increasing to 33 days on april 1 following a years service.
please note that this entitlement includes 8 bank/public holidays.
There is no payment or time in lieu granted for working on any bank/public holiday. These may be booked off following the normal holiday request procedure. you are obliged to retain one day for the christmas day close.
This does become more difficult if you would not normally work on Christmas Day in a particular year, but if that is the case, I would say you get to choose all 30 or 33 days.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. i agree if you have no set work days, and christmas day is the only day the company shuts down - then basically you are in charge of all your holiday dates, including bank holidays. other than the christmas day, which is the closed day, and the one they ask you to use from your entitlement
so you actually have 29 days holiday a year, as all of the days classed as b/h, can actually be taken at any point, not just on a week containing a b/h
