What does retain a day mean?

Ask your employer to explain it when you are next able to so so. The way you describe what happened is simply not clear enough for us to really know what has happened.
And while you are about it, just check when you holiday year starts.0 -
sorry guys i'll explain from the beginning i'm confusing everyone and myself more:
this is what my contract says:
Holiday entitlement is 30 days per financial year increasing to 33 days on april 1 following a years service.
please note that this entitlement includes 8 bank/public holidays.
There is no payment or time in lieu granted for working on any bank/public holiday. These may be booked off following the normal holiday request procedure. you are obliged to retain one day for the christmas day close.
My week starts Monday to Sunday -
Christmas week I worked Monday to Thursday, had christmas day off, boxing day off (which wasnt a bank holiday until the monday) and requested Sunday as a holiday day (unsure why i did this -was confused)
So did I sell myself short another day off?0 -
When you are not taking holiday, how many days a week do you work? You write as though you work seven days a week but I suspect that is not the case and that perhaps you work five or six days a week but that those days may vary.
So, please say what you normally have as a working week, whether it is always the same days or if they vary - perhaps even over a fortnight. We need to know how your working time is distributed.0 -
i work 37.5 hrs a week over 5 days days off can vary as long as i get my hours in0

basically this means that if you are rota'd to work a BH and you want it off you have to book it from your 30 days.
you need to retain one of your 30 days to have christmas day as a paid holiday leaving you 29 to take as and when you chose.
did you request sunday as a holiday as you were rota'd to work on the sunday?:heartpuls baby no3 due 16th November :heartpulsTEAM YELLOWDFD 16/6/10"Shut your gob! Or I'll come round your houses and stamp on all your toys" The ONE, the ONLY, the LEGENDARY Gene Hunt :heart2:0 -
I dont usually work Sunday so wouldve been working if i didnt book it off, I had christmas day off but didnt request this off, and i had boxing day off as normal day off.0

This doesnt make sense
Were you rota'd to work on the Sunday? You would only have had to book it as holiday if you were otherwise it would have been your normal day off.
You had Christmas Day off as your place off work shut down hence why you had to retain a day.
With the greatest of respect I think that you are making this more complicated that it is

you're right i'm making it complicated but it is all complicated to me as ive always had a straight forward contract before this job.
I work 5 days a week so since i worked 4 days then had christmas and boxing day off i booked the sunday as a holiday to make it up to 37.5 hrs.
So if i used boxing day as normal day off, i'm assuming christmas was another, but if they say to retain christmas day does that mean i should have had another day off that week or be owed it? if i'm still confusing then no worries i'll have to wait until i can speak to the boss0 -

You only need to book off days that you were due to work therefore you didnt need to book the Sunday.
What days should you have worked during Christmas Week?:heartpuls baby no3 due 16th November :heartpulsTEAM YELLOWDFD 16/6/10"Shut your gob! Or I'll come round your houses and stamp on all your toys" The ONE, the ONLY, the LEGENDARY Gene Hunt :heart2:0 -
As long as i work 5 days or 37.5 hrs its all good.
I worked monday to thursday (4 days)
Had christmas day off
Boxing day off
Booked sunday as holiday, otherwise i would have worked this to make up hours for week.0
