                    In my contract it says 'you are obliged to retain one day for the Christmas day close'
Does this mean I'm owed a day? If so I had two days off christmas week as well as Christmas day off, am i still owed another day?
I can't ask employer yet as she is on holiday and i'd love an answer soon

            It means "keep" so if you have 28 days holiday over the year you should save one of those to use over Xmas as your company will be closed but you will need to take it as a days holiday rather than just given it.

            Probably that you must keep one day of your holiday entitlement for the compulsory day off at Christmas, e.g. if you are entitled to 20 days a year, in a full year you can take 19 when you want them but must keep one back to use when the business is closed at Christmas.
 For most people this does not include the public, bank or statutory holidays (25, 26 December and 1 January in England and Wales)0

 No Christmas Day is yours by right, it is a public holiday, Boxing Day is a Bank Holiday and 1 January is a Statutory Holiday. For all intents and purposes each one is classified in your "8 bank holidays."  Your post does not make sense. VEGPIP is correct, they have used one of their eight bank holidays for Christmas Day.Gone ... or have I?0

 It appears that you are entitled to 30 days leave a year, 8 of which are "bank" holidays, one for the Christmas close down and 21 when you choose.
 If you took Christmas Day as the "Christmas close down" day then you have used two days for it.
 It seems that you do not have a Monday to Friday work pattern but on the assumption you have a five day working week. 25 & 26 were bank holidays and 27 was from your other 22 days entitlement, you haven't actually said that you had to take that off.0

 christmas day fell on a friday, so that will have been included in your B/H allowance, as would the monday, as that was a B/H too - your employer then made you use 1 of your retained holidays dates to cover either the saturday or sunday (with you either having to use another days holiday to get the whole weekend off, or go into work for one of the days)
