A question, if possible would you consider paying the debt yourself? It might be worth it for the peace of mind.
Re POA, BEFORE approaching the Court of Protection (COP) I would suggest that you talk to your mother about granting enduring power of attorney to a person or people she trusts. The spouse of a relative of mine had to approach the COP ( for my relative) and from what the spouse has said the court's oversight was a costly and, correctly so, invasive experience.
If you mother is concerned about granting enduring power of attorney to only one person then several attornies can be appointed and their authority can, I believe, be restricted to action to which all attornies agree. I was one of 3 attornies for another relative but we each had "several? authority" - permission to act without consultation with the other attornies so I am not well informed on the limitations of joint authority.
I recollect that EPOA can be invoked by the donor at anytime and, providing that the donor is deemed compus mentis, likewise revoked at anytime.
  • Would Barclaycard give her the bank details to pay to, and then she could set up a standing order from her bank to pay them? That way they get their payment every month, but can't increase the amount that they get?

I know the joys of Barclaycard phone calls all too well from old house mate who hasn't changed his address or phone number from our house one but I digress. as others have said look into taking power of attorney over. Also consider paying off the cad if posible or switching to a 0% interest card.
  • Sorry another thought came to mind, can they be reported to BT etc as nuisance calls or could she ask for a change of number and to be made ex-directory?

You can't report these as nuisance calls if there is a debt owing. As long as the calls are at reasonable times (when the carholder would be expected to be in the house and not asleep) and at a reasonable frequency (ie not 10 calls a day, every day) then they are within the debt collection guidelines.

My sympathy to OP as well, but I think POA may be the way to go here.

    Good luck with it!
