  • Hi IF :)

I think there must be something in the water - my OH also went through all his pocket money (£180) plus £30 and he's still got two weeks to payday! I subbed him £90 as he needs a haircut, some money for going out on our friends birthday at the weekend and he borrowed £30 of his savings which has disappeared into the ether. Fortunately I made £130 on ebay last month so I can cover it but I'm a bit annoyed that all my month's ebaying has been pretty much wiped out. He was feeling really guilty about it and he rang sky and cancelled £16/month worth of channels we don't watch so in the long run it's a good thing it's happened really.

Hope you have a good weekend! And hurrah for the new computer too!

  • Dear all,

Well, I am back again. I didn't want to come back because I've well and truly gone off the rails spending wise (credit cards) but I know if I don't start watching the pennies again, the few hundred quid I have set myself back over the past couple of months will become a few thousand quid. So - please don't be harsh on me.

So, I've been thinking about what to do. I've no idea how much my Tesco credit card balance is anymore although I received a statement a few days ago and only looked at the amount due, which was £32, so I'm reckoning around £1600. Plus I've been out and spent a fair bit today on a shopping spree (cringe) however I think I have put my shopping demons to rest. I'm now at the stage where even the impulsive little devil in my head is saying to me: "you don't need any more clothes!" and finding it hard to find stuff I want to spend money on!

So, I'm back on the wagon.

I have a plan: I've finally realised that it is daft to have £1359.31 in savings whilst I owe £1600+ on credit cards so I think I am going to take a deep breath and send it to my Tesco CC.

Then (I've nicked this idea off someone else) - carry on noting down my spends (money in bank, grand total) but rather than considering it as "money left to spend on what I want" I will try and get my head around it as "money left for debt repayment" and whatever is left will get paid off.

Once Tesco CC is paid off I might have to spend on it for household expenses (I'm thinking house insurance, emergencies etc but I'll do my best not to spend it on crap).

However saying that I do have an £1800 overdraft available on the bills account, and £1450 on my HSBC account so I do have plenty of accessible money in my bank accounts.

Do you think this is a good plan? I'm a bit scared of pressing that 'transfer' button!

    Welcome back!

Clearig the credit card seems like a v. sensible plan and will save you a large chucnk ofinterest each month. You'll have savings again before you know it.

So you splurged at the shops. Thats reversable. Does it fit? Do you like it and can you take it back for a refund?

You know you've got to bite the bullet and read the credit card statment to see just how much you do owe. Theres no point transferring all your savings across to it if it gives you a positive balance as some of the barstwards charge a monthly fee for being in credit.

Sorry. Too tired to make much sense. Suffering self inflicted disturbed nights and am v. grouchy.

It is so hard sticking to the frugal way of life for any length of time, I had a debate with somebody the other day and I really do believe that there of those of us who are spenders and those who are savers and it is really hard to deviate from this. I have had a terrible month and the plastic has well and truly had the cobwebs blown away, once you use it once or twice you realise just how easy it is just to hand it over and forget what you have spent. I am determined that I will turn over a new leaf in May.

As far as your plan goes I think paying off the credit card is priority number one and then if you have to put some of the household things on there in an emergency then that's ok, thats what credit cards should be for, an emergency and then you can pay it off as quickly as possible. Don't feel too guilty about your spends just clamber back up onto the wagon and hold on for dear life:).
