Immediately I feel all nervous about posting this....mostly because I know I am not really a well-known 'regular' so I'm not sure it's my place to try to start a new challenge or big thread! hope it's something that appeals to one or two others though so I won't be posting to a silent thread as the tumbleweed float by...!0

Hi daisiegg,
Please don't feel nervous, there is no need. Everyone, old or new is welcome here on Old Style!
We do however have an existing thread on this topic:
Cook Something Different Challenge
So once you've had some more replies I'll add your thread to that one to keep the inspiration and recipes in one place. Good luck with your challenge.

I'm also a not very frequent poster, but this challenge really appeals to me, as it's not a huge commitment beyond what I already do, and I am trying to be better with menu planning, rather than just cooking the old favourites without thinking.
Like daisiegg I have a shelf full of books that looked great when I bought them (some from charity shops, some full price:eek:) and the inside pages of some have never seen the light of day.
I also went through a stage of cutting out magazine recipes and sticking them in folders and scrap books. Of those, a few get used to death, but [STRIKE]many [/STRIKE] most looked interesting, but have never been made. I should sort that out as well, but that's another challenge...

It certainly appeals to me! I have a whole bookcase full of cookery books and like you many that have never been used in anger!
I love looking through them and thinking how nice some of the recipes are and I will make them ONE DAY, which never comes, of course. I also have books from waaaay back that have one favourite recipe in. Not to mention the large box of recipes cut out of magazines etc.
I'm willing to give the challenge a go, but whether I will have the nerve to part with any books I'm not sure. Let's give it a go though.I believe that friends are quiet angels

Please don't feel silly, because you aren't! There are so many threads on Old Style that it's hard to keep track of them all. I think it's a lovely idea for this time of year to resolve to try out new recipes. Besides, that thread will now be bumped up and many more people will be opening their cook books and giving new recipes a go.

I'd like to have a go, I have a love of cookery books, but a fear of cooking anything new because I worry about the children and OH turning their noses up. Even though I know the kids default reaction to anything new is to say they don't like it I always worry it might actually be my cooking! But my new years resolution was to get us all eating food cooked from scratch as much as possible, so I'll throw caution to the wind and have a go! (maybe start with cakes and puds.....)0

daisiegg - this is a great idea. I also love my cookbooks, and I've got so many family need to check with OH before getting me one as a present so they don't duplicate. Its now at the stage that my Mum, who is a great cook, phones me if she needs a recipe for something.
To help me with this challenge I'm also going to restart something I used to do. When I tried a new recipe that could be done in 30 minutes or less, I'd add it to a list called "good and quick" at the back of my shopping notebook. Solved the problem of doing something good once and then forgetting about it, and when things are busy it helps with menu planning.
Looking forward to hearing everyones plans.

I loved that old thread, and still do try to cook something different at least once a week, although I don't tend to keep posting it. Last week saw Trout with squash and cider from Valentine Warner-the Good Table (very good, made with apple juice rather than cider as we are on the wagon for january, and I couldn't bear to throw away nearly a whole bottle of cider as the recipe only called for 50mls, Chachouka from river cottage veg everyday(yummy, as has everything been from that book)
This week we have had turkey and spinach lasagne (online recipe-nice use of turkey, and I got over my cottage cheese fear:p) and Salmon with a mustard and herb crust from Lorraine pascales home cooking made easy (very tasty, but couldn't really taste the mustard, so less breadcrumbs and more mustard next time)
And for next week have planned macaroni peas from RCVE, and beetroot orzotto from nigella's christmas.
