Is carpet underlay really worth it?

Vote yes for underlay.
Last flat was without. Absolutely awful. Felt like no carpet at all, just concrete. Hard and cold.0 -
Another vote yes for underlay. We just moved into our first house and had the whole place recarpeted; downstairs didn't have any underlay at all, just a thin felt backed carpet over hardboard and it felt awful. Now we have 11mm PU underlay underneath our new 50oz 80/20 carpet and it feels gorgeous and much warmer too which is a bonus. Only problem is some of the doors don't close too well over the thickness...
I was pretty pleased with our fitter, paid him £350 to fit 3 bedrooms, lounge, dining room, hall stairs and landing (about 70sqm), including new door bars and putting in grippers downstairs. Plus £170 for the underlay. As we are close to London I was pleased with the price; plus he helped us out with a few bits of DIY while he was fitting, as we didn't have any tools of our own yet! What a nice guy. We bought the carpet online so that was great value too and very hassle free.0
