Is carpet underlay really worth it?

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to get some advice on whether carpet underlay is essential.

Am replacing carpets in a three bed house - the existing ones are awful and there is no underlay them at the moment.

Bought the carpet yesterday and the guy in shop said if you don't have underlay, you might as well not bother replacing the carpets - is this correct, it seems a bit extreme.

As tenants will be in the house, I am aware of lots of wear and tear. However, I am selling the house in five years and if I do get the underlay he recommended it will double the cost of the carpet??

Go for decent underlay and low range carpets

I work for lots of landlords and they usually lamlinate floor or cheap carpet dwellings

This way you could get the whole house (including underlay) for £400-£600 including fitting

It's worth paying for good underlay. The carpet feels much softer underfoot, you get better sound and heat insulation and most importantly the carpet will last much longer. A carpet without underlay (unless a very cheap carpet with its own bonded rubber/felt backing) is a waste of money.

When I bought the carpets for our bedrooms lack of money ment I went without underlay, I think it really makes a difference and when I eventually get round to replacing the carpets underlay will definatly be going down as well!

During the summer when it's too hot I sometimes sleep on the floor on one side of the fire where people don't tread. It's wonderfully springy with the underlay and adds an extra plushness.

The carpet has already cost me £600 and the underlay quote is nearly £500 not including fitting. It seems pretty steep for the underlay. I'm happy with the carpet - it's a heavy duty one and was in sale, so I might see if I can source the underlay from a cheaper place and have a look online for some carpet manufacturers.

get the underlay from B&Q proberbly be less then half that,how much they charging for the underlay per mtr

I agree thgat a good underlay makes a big difference. Whenever we have had carpet laid we fit all the underlay ourselves the night before the fitters come, it's always been about half the price that Carpet Right have quoted us and isn't that hard to do with a staple gun and good stanley knife!

Best to get a good underlay and a cheaper carpet imo. It should be about £40-£60 per roll.
