Hmmm think you need another drink and a moan in the pub and that should be enough.

Just to say we havent seen our bin men for over 3 weeks already and unless it thaws that could be indefinite.

The fantastic council in question is Preston, I have contacted them and there is no alternative arrangement.

Bin men may deserve a holiday, but then that arguement could be stretched to every job, meaning total shutdown for hospitals etc....

The principle is the main thing that bothers me, some will not be bothered by this who are single or couples etc, but families will struggle over festive seasons.

It's about time we got our moneys worth from our councils, the bills go up every year, but it seems the service gets worse...

I am in Preston and we have the exact same problem, plus fly tippers have added to it so there's an ugly pile of rubbish outside our flats!

i thought that was the norm in preston??

Nah only kidding, i agree its an inconvenice and they should have made alternative arrangements, our council is pretty good and came 2 days later due to the xmas period and are always a day later on bank hols
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

I've no doubt they'll come this week, but whether they take it all is anyones guess. Other residents have complained to the council already. I was merely sympathising with the OP.

Whilst I have a degree of sympathy, I think you misunderstand the concepts involved.

Over the past year, I've paid over £250 per month Council Tax. I've not used any council services other than having our bins collected. Our road is not adopted and so we pay for the upkeep and the electricity for the street lighting.

I understand the principle of paying tax and not necessarily receiving 'value for money'. Most higher rate taxpayers in the UK feel the same.

Council tax is, just that - a tax. It is not a payment for a service. You do not have the right to stop paying tax for poor service. If we did, I would not be paying any income or any other tax for the forseeable future.

Round our way, if your rubbish collection day happens to fall on a bank holiday then its tough - they simply collect when they are next scheduled to do so. As we have alternate weekly collections, then this usually means 4 weeks between a bin getting emptied.

Then they won't empty it if the lid is not fully shut, meaning you have to transfer 1 month old stinking rubbish into the car and queue up at the local dump for the best part of a morning to get rid of it.

Why not leave the one month old rubbish in the bin and take this week's rubbish to the tip

I used to work for a council collecting the paper waste a few years ago, more often than not we couldn't get round due to the weather especially up in the hills here but we always got asked to work Christmas eve, usually until 12pm simply because no one bothered putting their bins out.

I doubt you will get very far without paying your extortion tax but good luck anyway, send me a letter from the courtroom :p

I live in Leeds and our bin men went on strike for 11 weeks late last year! But unfortunately as Tozer said it is simply a tax and not payment for particular services. Shame though!

Our bin emptying services have been erratic before and over the holidays because of the snow. They are being emptied but not on the day that the council claim to be doing this on their website. Two things bug me about this
    • Bins have had to be left in the lane as we don't know when they are to be emptied. Idiots keep setting bins alight around here and that means more unnecessary work for the fire brigade who are forced to negotiate the icy roads that the bin wagons can't.
    • Isn't it the council that is supposed to stop the roads getting in such a treacherous condition in the first place. We've had side streets like skating rinks for 2 weeks now
