£1,000 cash in 1983 - how much worth today?

Are there any financial wizards who could tell me what £1,000 cash in 1983 is worth today? Or could some point me in direction of where to find this info?

Thanks.

Using this link I calculate £1,000 place in a typical savings account in 1983 would be worth £5,435 at the end of 2008 with no tax deducted.

Assuming a 20% tax deduction from interest each year (figure should probably be higher) it works out at £3,912.

You could calulate the figures using different measures, e.g. inflation, house prices, shares, wage rises etc.

This link gives the following figures:

FTSE all share: £5,593 (don't think that includes re-invested dividends, but not sure)
    RPI: £2,577
