Please help? Heating costs?

Hi there,

I've had a standard central heating system installed by a warm front grant. I've allowed a friend to stay at that house, and shes forever sick with a flu or a cold or something or another.

She has asked for me to allow her to use the central heating system and wants it on most of the day. Thats totally understandable because its like -2 outside right now. BUT.........

I was wondering if someone could help me workout how much it costs to run the central heating system per hour or so? Just a ball park figure so I know what kind of bill to expect.

Thank you all.

That is the ultimate 'how long is a piece of string' question!

    Depends on so many factors,

How big the property, standard of insulation, how cold outside, how warm inside, etc etc.

Your best bet is to run it for a few days carefully noting the gas meter readings.
However at this time of year with it being very cold, in an average house I would think £30 to £40 a week might be a ball park figure.

Hiya mate thanks for the reply. Its just a post war 2 bed semi detached ex council house. Nothing flash. Its well insulated though and has double glazing throughout. The central heating system was installed last year so its a new one. Say for example the heating was on for 3 or 4 hours a day. How much do you reckon it would cost in central heating?

We run our heating about six hours a day during winter in a four bedroom detached house and after three months the gas bill comes to around £400-£500.

Did warm front pay 100% of the costs of installing the heating system and if not then how much did it cost you to install the central heating system?

I hope you don't start timing how long she showers for.

What is the point of having a heating system and not using it?

If you are that worried about the cost read your gas meter, turn the heating on for a few hours then read your gas meter again then work out how much gas youv'e used.

I pay about £2 a day for my heating just now and although I think it is too dear I would rather pay it than be cold.

  • I would go with scottish power, I have been with them for three years and I always overpay so that in the winter I can use the heating properly. I end up in credit all the time and you can put your readings online once a month or more to get correct bills.

When you are sat at home and not moving you are bound to get cold so you have to keep the house warm.
