Holiday for woman on her own?

Can anyone recommend a 'safe' holiday for a woman in her 50's wanting to go somewhere on her own. I don't mind going abroad or just staying somewhere in the UK. I have never holidayed on my own before and am not sure if I will enjoy it. I prefer a relaxing break to an activity break!

I've never been but Madeira is supposed to be beautiful and not geared towards the young. The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.0

Safest place you could go to is dubai. Very relaxing on beach, nice hotels, calm scenery and good shopping. Friendly people and almost no crime. Worth a look into. (slightly hot at this time of yearr though). Theres a few threads on dubai, and almost all positive coments. Just an idea for you.0

I would definately recommend Iceland. Beautiful scenery, freshest air I've EVER breathed, lovely people and lots to do. Also although I have not yet done it on my own I think anywhere in Scotland would be fine. Particularly in the Highlands. Thought about using the offer on the trains and trying some different places in UK for a day or just an overnight to see if you like it? I'm doing that. Got Leicester and Cardiff next on the agenda and this way it doesn't break the bank or use up precious holiday if it turns out to be NOT what you wanted. Good luck.:T0

You could try a singles cruise or just any cruise. I know that some lines charge significant surcharges but others do not (I think Fred Olsen limit the single surcharge). Some cruises have special meetings and group activities for singles

Hello
I am 45 and being single always travel alone.
I have just returned from Lake Garda, Italy and felt perfectly safe the whole week. There is plenty to see & do both organised and independently and the average age of fellow travellers from the UK was 50+.
In the past I have also been to Menorca, Majorca, Villamoura in Portugal, Madeira and closer to home, Jersey.
I have felt completely safe in all of my chosen destinations.
I usually choose a minimum of a 3 star accommodation on half board basis and close to local amenities.
Good luck in your choice of destination.0 -
You could try having a look at http://www.travelscope.co.uk which have a lot of holidays for all budgets. I've been on a few holidays with them and you are never 100% on your own as everyone is very friendly and helpful.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

I've been to Madeira on my own and personally wouldn't recommend it.
I would recommend a small resort in Greece (the Greeks in the main are such friendly people, and most speak English), maybe somewhere like Kalami in Corfu or Vassiliki in Lefkas, nice small resorts - couple of shops, few tavernas, couple of bars, and if you are on your own I'd recommend doing the operator tours of the island, and on Lefkas they did a star gazing evening tour which I loved. I always avoided the meal & drinks type tours though. I always found the locals to be far more friendly than the other British holiday makers.0 -
I started travelling on my own a good few years back, as I got fed up with waiting for people to come anywhere with me. I am now 54 and have met some wonderful people along the way, young and old. Now, I am not a meanie but just hate paying that single supplement...........so I don't. I have found using the Youth Hostels in Europe and in the UK are just fine and you are with like- minded people. I regularly meet up with a Canadian pal I met in Florence three years ago whom I regularly keep in touch by email. We have met up in Paris,La Rochelle .At Easter I visited her at home in Haifa,Israel and she has stayed with me in UK. We are meeting up again in October in Budapest.
I have used travel companies, Kuoni are fairly priced for long haul single travellers did a super Safai in Kenya with them. Prague and China with Travelsphere. Egypt with Jules Verne.
Why don't you try a weekend break as a taster. That way you will be away long enough to decided whether single travel is for you. There are so many cheapie flights out there...........too good to miss, there are always transfer buses into town.
I could go on forever but please email me if you want to discuss anything in depth.SallyD0 -
I've travelled alone a lot in the past. I can especially recommend Ireland as a nice destination for a first timer. Off season especially, I've been a few times and the standards of B&B accomodation are high, and you'll find helpful tourist info places everywhere. You can usually find places where there is live entertainment and no-one looks ascance at a lone woman in a bar (unlike in Scotland where a woman alone should not go into the "ordinary" bar in a pub unless she doesn't mind being stared at, in my experience). If you want to look for a possible travel companion try https://www.travelchums.com or you could look at going with something like https://www.solosholidays.co.uk . I went on one of theirs to Turkey - a country I would not myself visit alone - it was good but expensive.M.E..... MORE than you know0

A friend of mine travelled to Lidi di Jesolo in Italy on her own a few years ago and enjoyed it so much she went again!
