Agency lieing about the number of job vacancies

I have registered with a recruitment agency. The agency has 500 office/admin vacancies, and now there are 400ish vacancies left. I have registered with them in November.

Now in December, they haven't even put me forward for those vacancies, despite contacting them weekly. They keep saying if I've been selected to be put forward for an interview, we will contact you about this. Last few weeks, they have called me, and they need more referee details, as the ones I provided aren't acceptable - fair enough, I provided the correct ones. They also told me, that their monthly quota has been filled up, and the next intake will be in January.

When I past the agency each week to go to the JC, the number of vacancies has changed.

I think they are lieing about the quota being filled up for the month, between the month I registered until this month. Do you think they are lieing? I wanted to go in to query, but didn't think it was a good idea, as it might be rude to query about it, and accuse them of lieing, etc...

  • Their an acency, another name for liar:confused::confused:

My expierence is with LGV driver agencies, but suppose its the same with them all, they need names of prospective employees to satisfy clients. For every position they will need at least 3 candidates. They may have these jobs on their list, but you don't know at what stage they are at, some could be vacant, some at interview and some filled.

I just take what they say with a large pinch of salt. E.g I signed on for the xmas rush, told 'yes, plenty of runs should keep you busy up till xmas' That was at the begining of Dec, not had one run off them.

Agencies are a waste of time - either they don't put you forward, have fake adverts to get peoples details or put you forward for unsuitable jobs.....
  • I've done well out of agencies over the years however you learn to read between the lines and recognise the lies, one of them being non-existent posts or posts that do exist but they've got their "golden boys" earmarked for.

When you register with an agency any decent recruitment consultant should 'spec' you in with all appropriate clients (vacancy or not)that they have on their books. This should happen on a weekly basis.
Their job is to sell you, get you out working and make money.
If your not getting any work then register with every agency in the area.. tell them all you have done this and sit back and wait ;)
A lot of companies use more than one agency.
PS the recruitment consultants are target driven and this time of year is the hardest for them, please don't be shy about making them earn their living.

PS if an agency advertises a 'fake' job they are breaking the law.

Whether they are being truthful or not is beside the point. They may have two vacancies or 200, but if you aren't what they are looking for they won't put you forward for any jobs.

NEVER put all your eggs into one basket. If the one agency isn't coming up with the goods, try some others. At one stage I was registered with around 30 agencies from all over the country (that said I was quite willing to relocate for the right job).

There are also numerous searches you could do online. Have you tried your local council's website? Or newspaper websites? If there's a specific company you'd like to work for, perhaps check out their site. Then there are the job portals such as http://www.fish4.co.uk/jobs/...

All they are interested in is filling vacancies, in order to do that they sign up as many people as they can get to put forward for the positions and to do that they have to lie!

Employment agencies exist to make their owners money and solve the problems of companies that need temporary help, not to solve your problem of needing work. I'm saying that not to patronise you, but to suggest you always keep that rule at the front of your mind when trying to determine the motives of an employment agency/consultant. Regardless of how you get paid, if you are temping for a employment agency you are really working for yourself until the day you accept a full time position. If you're not temping then the same applies except for the bit where you get money for temp work in the meantime.

In my experience its a very competitive market place - I hear from a good few agencies all the time bombarding me with offers for help, and this is despite working in the public sector for an organisation that very rarely hires anyone, and I know from when I've been out of work registering with agencies that they will say anything to get people to sign up so they have a big pool of people - not because they maybe have that amount of jobs but because they want to be able to put a decent "fit" of people forward for any possible contract they get a sniff of, temporary or permanent.

With this in mind, you now know what to do - register with a large number of agencies as has been suggested already and while there is something to be said about building up a good working relationship with an agency and becoming a "golden boy" if you might be temping long term, always remember that they are not solving your problems so you need to do that for yourself and if it means juggling lots of them at once and being quite prepared to string several along at once if they're all promising good vacancies...

I'm sure your original references were fine. The reason they ask for new ones is this:

They will call the reference that you have given, and spend ages on the phone going through a reference, talking to the person, building up rapport etc. Then, before they end the call, they will start to ask the person giving the reference about how they recruit, if they have any jobs open etc etc.

I only know this because I get calls once every few weeks...sometimes the same agency will call up and take a reference on someone who I gave one for last week.

    Proc has it!
Recruitment consultants are trained to pick up leads. Referencing is a beut .. start with the ref then ask about temporary staffing requirements .. who they currently use etc..
Another one is someone who registers gives details of any temp work completed for other agencys ..the recruitment consultant might get the reference for the applicant from the other agency but believe me every company you have temp'd at will get a call.
