I have registered with lots of Agencies in my time and most of the time got nowhere with them. Only ever got one job from an agency, that was Hays recruitment.

Like previous posters have said, they put you forward for unsuitable jobs or ones that are too far away.

One thing you need to consider is if the agency has 1000 people on their books looking for work and of them, half of them have either:
    1. Done similar work though other agencies,
    2. Been recommended to them by another highly regarded temp on their books,
and the other half haven't, who will be the first candidates the agency is going to choose when they have a vacancy come up?

The ones they think they can rely on to keep the good relationship with their client.
Most of the time you hand them your CV and this is not the copy that goes to the employer, it's retyped into their own format and quite often contains little white lies!

The agency will be sending out more than one CV and to make it easier for the company often will retype them all to their agency format. They will also try and emphasis why the candidates they have sent the CVs to the client are worth taking on so will sometimes add their own information thinking they are making things clearer.

You need to make sure you see the CV they send over before interview or turn up to the interview with a copy of your own CV.

BTW if an agent has a role for you they aren't interested in your references in detail. The majority of my references are now other agencies, due to companies going bust, or HR departments both of whom will only verify where I've worked.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

    Hi Rose

    Can you clarify?

I notice a pattern with your comments and my posts. Please remain open to criticise when you counter what someone has said and not post something which basically says I disagree with you, why? Why am i misinformed? Tell us!

I like to point out that:

    - the Estate Agents are from my own experience so the ones in my area ARE like that. You are welcome to try your area for residential properties, find a few places, wait a month if they still advertised ring up and request a viewing they will tell you the "property is no longer available" or "under offer"

    - most businesses offer "solutions"

    - "cherry pick" and "park" exists the good enough ones get chosen the others get left. Agencies don't reject these poor applicants they just accept and avoid/ignore them, that is parking them.

    - Fake Agency Ads are a BIG problem (I don't state for one second that all agencies are like that most are genuine so its not a big digg at all agencies) BBC Scotland had an investigation on this earlier in the year I believe. They recommend people to report such agencies to BERR.

    Hello,

I have just tried to post twice and it's not registered

    So, again:

The estate agants: I have no idea, that's an area I don't have experience in.

"Solutions" Of course most businesses offer this now. Cliched. But true, in the marketplace today, most businesses need to make themselves stand out.

"Cherry Picking" Of course this happens. It is what the agency is being paid to do.

"Fake ADs" Totally illegal. But most agencies will need to build a pipeline of suitable candidates. So a job may be advertised with no known fixed starting date, could be two months away, but the requirement IS there.

    Hope this helps

 Also, I meant to say (and did in my posts that vanished) that the pattern in posting is only because obviously we're both online, and commenting on the same threads. Nothing personal at all intended as I'm new here too.

    Happpy New Year!

Yes they appear to exploit a loophole in the system by either saying that the position is currently on hold or we need to register people for this vacancy because it might become available in due course. Therefore it is difficult to prove that the ad is a fake !!

Have you considered that it would actually be the Client that is either a)putting the vacancy on hold or b)postponed the start date?

    Just a thought.

The consultants really don't have the time to be managing 'fake' vacancies

I think I'd also like to add that the agency will ONLY make money fulfilling a client request and placing a suitable (temp or perm) candidate into a vacancy.

So, it would make very bad business sense for the agency to only advertise fake roles. It actually costs them money to advertise roles, and pay a consultany to fill them........:confused::confused:

Yes I have ,but I don't believe them as I say the vacancy more then likely didn't exist in the first place in an attempt to get more candidates registered through their doors. Lets face it Recruitment consultants now tell more lies then estate agents !!

Similar answer to my previous reply. It would be worth the consultants time to advertise fake vacancies to again get people that are interested in the job to register with the agency.

Sorry but I don't get this as it would not cost the agency anything to advertise a job that doesn't exist, as it will never be filled !
Just to reiterate they want as many people registered with them to suit their needs and are just using many of the candidates who they will have no intention of finding work for just to give them job leads.

Lets face it agencies are their to just to suit their clients needs and not their candidates registered with them !
