Full hd tv and sky question

Options
Apologies if this has been covered already, i did have a flick thorugh all the posts but couldn't find an answer.

I've bought a new tv, Full HD 1080 with freeview. I have sky+ at the moment but i'm wondering if i still need to upgrade to sky+hd even though the tv is 'Full HD' I'm not technical in the slightest so haven't a clue what i'm talking about. All the stuff i can find on this says that you need sky+ hd with your hd ready tv...but mine isn't hd ready, it's full hd.

Can anyone help?

Yes you do.The Sky+ HD has the HDMI connection & stuff you need to watch the programmes in HD,The bog standard HD doesnt,it only supports SD.
  • Thanks you! If i had an hdmi cble would i be able to view hd without the sky+ box? My mum has one she's offered me.

What would you intend to connect the HDMI cable to?

If you don't have the Sky HD box you wont get HD

(Obviously you can get HD from blu-ray)

You also wont get full HD on sky HD, when I say full hd I mean 1080p only 1080i

I believe Cable and I know freeat HD is also not 1080p but it still looks stunning in 1080i

Only blue-ray, or on some occasions a pc can use full HD 1080p

Your TV is HD Ready. Not just ready for HD (720 lines) but ready for Full HD (1080 lines). The term should really be Full HD Ready.
As above, you've got the HD screen, but if you plug a VCR into it, that won't suddenly become HD.
I hope you don't think you're watching FreeviewHD...

Lol i told you i was totally dense when it came to things like this! Thanks all for your answers, i don't even know what an hdmi cable is never mind know what to connect it to! I just thought maybe i'd connect it to my sky+ box and tv lol!

No, i didn't think the freeview was hd, it does have freeview but i wouldn't use that anyway as i have my sky+.

It is 1080p if that makes any difference?

Simple terms, your current Sky+ box connects useing a chunky SCART lead which will only give you SD (IE normal tv) picture.
A Sky HD box connects with a HDMI lead which is a bit like a computer USB lead in looks, this gives you the HD programmes on the TV.You can watch normal SD tv from your current box but to get the full benifit, you need a HD Box.
A SD picture is like an old Poleroid photo wheras the HD is a digital photo in comparison.

"bog standard HD?" Sky+ not HD, Sky+HD=HD, by the way 1080i IS Full HD!

    OOps....Meant Sky+
  • I already have sky+ and I am thinking about getting sky HD. The only thing is, I was wondering if I need another cable running from the sat dish to the box/tv or is it simply changing the box and a lead from hd box to tv. The only reason I am asking is because I have put loads of boxes around the edge of the loft and didn't want to start and move everthing around again for more cables. Thanks for any advice.
