Its standard practice for mobiles - all above board. By using the phone, you are deemed to accept T&C conditions, you have right to cancel and return phone within 14 days if purchased online. No such right if purchased in store.

As I say - if the phone is worth something, it could sold to pay towards the cost of the contract line rental. But its best to work out and check carefully how much it is worth by asking questions on forums like this.

On some networks I think, like Voda you can downgrade the tariff by £5 a month till it reaches the lowest the network offers. But that can only be done if you have had contract for 9 months I think. T-mobile you have to be in last month of contract to be able to do that.

She could phone the network and ask if that is possible, explain the situation - might get someone sympathetic to the situation, possibly offer some way of paying for line rental in smaller batches.

How much more intrusive/meddlesome can a government/state become - I have good mind to de-stress every day now by phoning up.

Its quite ridiculous, but i guess this thread does prove that there is a market for this service, although I wish noone needed this type of service; its the sad truth.
