strange things swimming in my pond

I have a small pond in the garden and i thought it was about time i did something with it. 2 weeks ago i emptied the stagnant water out and filled it with clean tap water, i also got the fountain working and left it on to keep the water moving.
Today i looked at the pond and the water has gone green and there are lots of very small black tapole like things swimming around, are theres tadpoles and i didnt see and frog spawn or any frogs ?

thanks

Are they really teeny teeny tiny wiggly things that look like tadpoles, because I have got some like and although I have no idea what they are, I know that they're not tadpoles as I have those and they're definitely not the same.

I suspect that they are some kind of midge, mosquito or some other kind of flying insect larva.

i had some in a bucket in the garden.. no idea what they were either so i emptied them out.
Probably mutant, virus carrying amphibian spider mossies.
  • They could be gnat larvae? Small things that poke the end of their tails out of the water and when disturbed they submerge and whizz down in a wiggly motion. We used to call them jugglers and jokers, you normally see them in water butts.

    Stagnent water?

Probably mosquito's, better to get rid of them, having a goldfish or 2 in there will eat them.

If the water was changed 2 weeks ago, it's unlikely these are tadpoles. As beer2006 I would say these are mosquitoe larvaes. When all is quiet, they raise to the surface and breath through their tail, diving deep as soon as they are disturbed. Good fun is the stick a couple gold fish in the water, they will be in for a treat.
  • oh yea I thought they were gnats but they are mozis. Have a look here 6th row down http://www.bramleyfrith.co.uk/naturenotes/pond.htm

I was just about to start a thread and noticed this!

I built a pond last year and had 2 carp, 2 prize winning goldfish and 6 smaller goldfish.

just a couple of months back they started dying on me, they formed a sort of white moss sticking to them (which could have been caused by over-feeding)and eventually left with 2 gold fish which i transfered into a house tank.

I've now cleaned out the water (which has also now turned green).
It also has beetles and snails in, should they be removed or do they break down the algue?
Also heard putting barley stems into socks purifies the water?

    Any pro. pond experts?

I think the problem was caused by having too many fish in the same water (I guess your pond was slightly smaller than Lake Windermere. Their dejections etc, putified the water and they started to die of low oxigenation etc.
Barley in socks is something I have also read about. The snails and beetles are all natural beasties so leave them alone.

Bring oxigene generator plants to the pond and do not overstock.

buy a book on ponds and look them up

even puddles have an eco system and little things are eaten by bigger things wich are eaten by even bigger things.......untill the things get to big and ar eaten by smaller things wich die and are eaten by microscopic things.

In other words dont worry its the miricale of life abd the way GOD planned it you dont have some new life form in your pond just something that ypu havent noticed before beacuse there was other things to look at,

Ie if you went to africa you would want to see Lions Elephants etc yet under your bed there are some amazing insects that would fasinate you for hours.
