:-) A grad scheme i have my eye on does not mention its requirements to apply(as long as your a graduate i assume). The 2007 recruitment opens in September. I really want this one, but do not want to mess it up at the application stage as i have yet to apply for any grad sche,es yet as i plan to travel this year,...and with my 2:2 i am limited. If anybody has been on a grad scheme of has or is enrolled in the process, it would be great if i could get some advice and ill post you the link.0

Hey pbright,
I'm joining a grad scheme this september. If you need any help just give me a shout.
ViruI'm better off without you.0 -
My 2:2 in single hons physics was a bit of a let down for me - well that's ho w i felt at the time . A 1st was def not on cards but 2.1 like you was what i was hoping for . Must have been the partying in the final year that did it!
The good news is it doesn't make a blind bit of difference to 99% of employers - a 3rd even - get your foot in the door with your choice of employer and once their it's how you perform at the appraisals.
(The only time you need top grades is for academic placements - say i wanted to work at Cern particle accelerator but working for a large company was not a problem)
Having said that i now work for myself! Good luck with your career. :T0 -
No offence, but it sounds like you have your heart set on the grad placement. The competition for these are very high so I wouldn't just go for those. Got to keep your options open!
I got a 2.2 at uni, and I don't think it would have made a difference if I got a 2.1. There are lots of people applying for most jobs so you've just got to have the right attitude, you've just got to keep on applying for jobs!0 -
What did you do and do you do gems. yes i have my heart on a grad scheme!! i dont know what my options are outwith this and i feel it will be of great benefit for me0

I did English and Film and Media studies and am working for a company maintaining their websites and doing their online marketing, a job which I really enjoy.
Don't get me wrong, I think you should apply for the grad positions and try and get one but don't pin all your hopes on them as the competition is fierce. Just apply for jobs that interest you! What kind of work are you after?0 -
Fricaso is right: Getting the degree is the most important thing.
How far off a 2:1 were you? Some schemes will surely consider somebody who narrowly missed a 2:1? I don't think there is any significant difference between somebody who achieves a 61, and somebody with a 59. Similarly with those close to other boundaries. I think it would be easier if we could just list percentages instead of a degree class, which typically encompasses a wide range of abilities (I'd rather take the high 2:2 than somebody falling close to a third).
Something like 50% (?) of people leaving University have to come out with a 2:2, and it's not like all of them are doomed. Seems to me that it's not the degree grade, but what you do with it after that is more important.'We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. I graduated a few years ago. The degree you have doesn't affect your overall success rate. The two people that I know that got a third are now extremely successful. There are many ways to get where you want and a good degree doesn't necessarily guarantee it. One of my friends got a first but she wanted to work for an NGO so she volunteered / interned for six months until they offered her a lowly paid job. She then applied herself in the way she had during her degree and now has a high level job.
I wanted to continue studying and in order to finance it I do what some people would term an unskilled job (it is skilled - it just doesn't involve the recognised 'academic' skills). If you do decide you want to go on and do a Masters then Birkbeck University in London take on people with a 2:2 or with relevant 'life' experience.
Good luck, don't worry about the grades. Life is what you make it and 'ego' jobs won't necessarily make you happy.
PS Well done for getting a 2:2 you obviously did work. Perhaps you could contest it. You have got nothing to lose.24.06.14 12 st 12 lb (waist 45" at fattest part of belly)
