How to make money from my old CRT TV?!

Options
Hi All,

Not sure if this is the right forum, but here goes! I'm thinking of upgrading our living room TV to a nice shiny new HD TV. I'm not sure what make & model to get yet, but the thing that is really bugging me is:

What to do with my old TV to get some money back from it somehow?!

Its a nice traditional CRT flat-screen Sony - about 30" or something; its huge and wieghs a tonne and has its own stand and DVD / Freeview compartment!

Is it worth putting on eBay? I wouldn't be able to send it by post, so it would have to be a local pick up, and I dont think i would get much for it.

Sony were doing a cash back thing at one point, but i don't think they are any more, and it tied you into getting a new Sony LCD TV - which aren't always the best / cheapest models available.

Does anyone have any good ideas about how to make some cash out of this old TV?!! Cheers!

PS. The wife wont let me keep it - she says there's not enough room for it!!

You will be lucky if you can. They just don't have any value, my advice would be to freecycle it.

If its in very good working order then the British Heart Foundation may take it off your hands, otherwise its off to the tip, you'd have more chance getting money for a Betamax machine.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • I had a 32" crt with a glass stand and sold on Gumtree for £80

We struggled to give ours away on freecycle and it was only 4 years old.

No one seems to want them these days, I chucked a couple out last month from MIL and I got two small tvs to get rid off. All off to get recycled I hope

I sold a 32" CRT about a year ago for £85 on Ebay and the buyer came to pick it up from me the same evening that the auction ended - saved me a job taking it to the tip and a few quid to boot too

  • I was getting rid of the Christmas rubbish at the tip yesterday and you wouldn't believe the amount of CRT's that were stacked in the corner.

You could always try the auction sites its worth a go. If it doesn't sell then you could see if a family member or friend want it for free for another room. Failing that it will more then likely end up in the landfill unfortunately.
  • Cool. Thanks for the help everyone - I'll give it a shot on eBay then. Something is better than nothing!!
